A new driver distraction

A driver distraction so awful that even AutoWeek dot com thinks it's a bad idea!
1 point for AutoWeek for recognizing the dangers of distracted driving. First line of the article:

A company called SameLane has developed proprietary software that, if embraced by the general public, is sure to help cause highway havoc and increase the number of accidents and deaths on the highway.

That's really interesting. Thanks for sharing. I love the guys sarcasm.

Though, truly, it really is an extension of just using a cell phone. It'll probably tapper with use as myspace does. People don't go on myspace to meet new people. They go on there to "socialize" with the ones they already know.

Brilliant!

Hey, why don't we go all the way and do away with the steering and braking systems. We can all just drive around using The Force.

WHAT THE F*** ARE THESE GEEKS THINKING??!!??

Driving is NOT --- NOT --- NOTTTTTTT!!! --- the time to be socializing with people in other cars!! that anyone would invest serious time and money into a self-destructive gadget/system is a sad and pathetic statement on the decadence of our society. it is my hope that this product never sees implementation, based simply on compromising public safety.

I agree this is really stupid, but...

As a cyclists I've often wanted to hear what a motorist is saying/thinking. I'd rather have them 'speak' to me vs. honk at me for 13-17 seconds or tailgate. There is are very few mature ways to respond to honk, other than ignoring, smiling or slow signal. I'm not suggesting that this verbal communication would happen via cell phone though, but I would like to be able to read some motorists minds.

I'm impressed. I somehow thought that automotive journalists would use more... harmless descriptions of motor vehicles. Next thing they'll be calling themselves *cagers*.

But if you really wanted to talk to the road-raging character behing you, can't you just spray-paint your number on the back of your car or something?

If I had to bet, I'd say that if they have the ability to communicate with each other verbally it will lead to more, not less, road rage - escalation fueled with words.

Likely scenario

AHole 1 cutts off AHole 2 forcing I whole 2 to swerve.

Ahole 2 looks up AHole 1 license plate to find is phone no.

Ahole 2 calls Ahole one screaming: "Hey-Ahole, you just cutt me off"

Ahole 1 responds: "eff You, you were driving slower than traffic"

Ahole 2 then swerves and passes and cutts off ahole 1

Ahole 1 and 2 either: a) cause a further accident or b) pull over to the side and beat the crap out of each other.

Seriously, these people didnt think the above scenario was more likely to happen than someone seeing their long lost friend in the carpool lane and dailing them to stop for a cup of jo at starbucks????

Read SameLane's response. Thier logic is incredibly full of holes and rationalization it's scary. It reminds me of a 6 year old explaining why they should be able to do something you told them not to.

I'm still transitioning a bit into being car-free...so I can somewhat respond to this. However, also, I generally get the impression that I am more sociable than "many". When driving long distance...I speed. Big shock. It's not been uncommon for me to get "speeding buddies"...the whole idea that there's strength or less likelihood of getting pulled over if you're speeding with another or more cars (except for in GA, they pull whole speeding caravans over on I-75). I'll keep pace with my speeding buddies and have tried to synchronize my refueling with theirs.

I would agree that my speeding buddies probably do not see me the same way I see them.

What happens when 2 motorists get into a fight because of road rage & one kills the other or worse they kill an innocent person not involved? Will samelane have a culpability or liability?

No one is innocent, haven't you heard? The so-called innocent person should have been taking responsibilty for his own safety and been somewhere else.

One thing for sure, the motorists are not responsible for that dumbell killed person who didn't take the appropriate steps not to be killed. At least that's what I've been reading lately on A & S.
