Go to his post, click "Reply With Quote" and look at the code. He used [ IMG ] path to external image here [ /IMG ] tags to link to an external image.
When you "Go Advanced" and used the "Manage Attachments" feature on this site, it creates a thumbnail preview to show an image that has been uploaded and is now stored on the BF servers.
Does that make sense?

Is it logical for BF to post a thumbnail ONLY when you have uploaded an image and not when you link to one? No.
Is it logical not to give the writer the option of how large an image to display? No.
Is it logical to force the reader to click on the image to see it full size? No. (Besides, how many people actually do that, or know to do that?)
But that's only a minor quibble. Now that I know how it works, I will post images to a URL somewhere instead of uploading them.

I'm guessing some of these behaviors are remnants of back when server space was at a premium.
I remember when we weren't given an option of uploading files. We had to have an external place to host our images.
All this talk has me curious. Let's do a little test.
I'll upload the same file in the three ways I'm aware that BF allows.
First, I'll use "Manage Attachments" without the "Inline" feature.

These are all the same sized original files. Once they get uploaded to BF, they are scaled down and then scaled down again to create a thumbnail (notice clicking on the thumbnails does not bring either image back up to its original size).
Interesting.
Interesting.

It seems to me the same people routniely derail conversations on A&S and then start calling each other names. As any thought been given to making A&S more like P&R meaning posting there is a privilege not a right?

We have thought about it and we figured if people just followed the forum guidelines then things should be civil. The original post for this thread in 2007 still stands:
A&S has turned into the new P&R, and the moderation queue is being overrun by complaints. If you cannot refrain from personal attacks, petty arguments, and constant bickering over cycling technique, IT WILL BE CLOSED.
Yes, if you cannot respect each other, the entire A&S forum will be shut down so you can all go out for some fresh air and cool off a bit.
Thank you for your cooperation.

All of BF has become much less civil. Try posting about a light thats not approved by the masses in commuting and see what happens
I really miss the days of Joe -- It seemed like a much more organic and friendly forum. The growth has been good for IB, but bad for civility

believe it or not, lights are up there in the most controversial subjects on bikeforums. It's not a lack of civility so much as strongly held beliefs and people that can't stand disagreement. Actually, light threads have been controversial on here for some time.

Not to belabor the unpleasantness of the subject, but to me, the commuting forum, the reason I signed on and donated years ago, was a very friendly place. Everyone was sort of a 'community'(?). Only A&S and P&R were the cage fighting venues. Maybe my tolerance for it has gone down, but any forum you go to will eventually degrade somewhat by some unnecessary negativity. I almost wish there was a 10 minute delay in posts so people might have a chance to reconsider the random act of unkindness they are about to commit on someone.

With a forum of this size and the membership being diverse, we need to see these acts of name calling and bickering. If people would report it, then we can act on it.

Compared to some forums I've been on, BF is very civil and well moderated. Though some BF forums maybe compared to cage fighting, at least there are more rules than some of the street fighting forums I've visited elsewhere on the internet. Some of us cyclists, that do the daily urban commute grind, can be a little testy and rough around the edges at times due in part to the nature of the environment that we have to contend with on a daily basis.

I'd be happy to conform, but I have just one problem.....What the heck is A & S, and P & R.? Lately, I've been thinking I may need an interpreter just to communicate.

You are IN A&S (our abbreviation) and P&R is Politics and Religion (a by invitation forum, you have to ask permission and are scrutinized so it's really nowhere to just dink around).
C&V is Classic and Vintage (mostly touring and road bikes of yesteryear).
SSFG is Single Speed and Fixed Gear...Single speed is exactly what it implies, fixed gear is usually SS but it's sort of like square vs. rectangle in geometry class.
Fixie-fixed gear, usually a bike stripped of all multi-gear equipment, with attachments for this equipment permanently removed...often a source of disapproval for other cyclists because a lot of expensive, classic bikes are hacked by seemingly clueless persons in many cases because it's fashionable among the younger set. Often safety gear like BRAKES are left off...causing even more consternation. Craigslist is a common source of fodder for derision and lamentation over these bikes and many other confounding seller issues as well.
'Bent' means a recumbent bike (seated horizontally with legs forward to pedal), which can also be related to...
HPV-human powered vehicle (such as a pedaled three or four wheel vehicle, often built to achieve high speed records and explore vehicular transportation concepts)...
hence, VC is vehicular cycling-using a bike/HPV for everyday travel in place of an auto or other motorized vehicle.
"Ghost Bike"-The bike of a fallen cyclist, painted all-white as a memorial and placed along a tribute route or at the scene of the fatality.
"Sheldon" and related-tribute to Sheldon Brown, late and beloved bicycling advocate who is paid tribute here by those who have the eagle icon next to their ID (like ME).
Ti, Titanium Club-paid membership feature that removes ads and gives other special benefits to Ti members (and I'm one of those too).
I've forgotten what the old red star is for, been a while ( -=(8)=- in this thread has one).

Thank you Brian;
Bicycle safety is a very interesting issue. It is the grass roots of tomorrow's legislation.
The State Governor got in a wreck on a bike trail - a collision with another cyclist and broke ribs and his collarbone. Same day I did, similar injuries. The next thing the General Assembly passed mandatory helmet laws for minors!
