Helmet - advice request

I have an very old helmet and -- 5+ years. Is it still safe? If not, can anyone suggest a good helmet. I read that the Giro Atmos is very good -- but pricey. I also read that the Bell Sweep is quite good. Can anybody help?

I love Giro. Best designs, but can't afford them. I recently bought the Specialized Aurora on sale, and way less expensive than the Atmos. I really like the Aurora.

The bell Alchera is a nice helmet. It has the GPS fitting system and fits very well. There are tons of vents and plenty of nice colors.

That helmet should still be fine as long as you have not damaged it in the last 5 years. As long as everything looks good, I say you can still use it. You can also pick up a new helmet, Bell, Giro, at pretty cheap prices.

After a certain price point you are paying for comfort, vents and style. I myself wear a sk8er lid that went for 25$CDN.

I got a Bell Citi because it was a.) ranked as a Best Buy by consumer reports (https://www.helmets.org/up0605b.htm), b.) affordable, c.) didn't look too "professional racer". I'm happy with it. It's comfortable and I don't feel like I'm a giant toadstool on a bike.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Theoretically, you should replace every 2 years, due to UV breakdown of the plastics and depolymerization, at least that's the recommendation as I've read it.

I'm happy to shell out $35 every two years just in case UV breaks down my helmet.

My 2¢.

Somehow that styrofoam coffee cup I just threw away is going to sit unscathed in a landfill for the next thousand years. Yet my high quality foam helmet is going to disintegrate in 2 years because it sees the sun for 7 hours a week. Pahlease....can't you people see a scam?

This is a recurring topic and a good thread was

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...hlight=replace

You don't have to replace a helmet unless its damaged and recomondation for replacement are usually based on the damage criteria. If manafacturer sells more helmets than needed, that a bonus for them
