Glenna Evans, 27, Vancouver BC, July 9, 2010. Hit a minivan skating Mt. Seymore.

Glenna died skateboarding but I knew her from the bike scene, she was dancing in the Velo Vixens from Victoria BC a few years ago when I met her.

Neal D. Malloy, 58, from Vienna Va., died Sunday. He was going close 30mph and swerved to miss a groundhog when the accident happened on Sept. 23, 2010.

At the time of the accident, he and a number of other members of the DC-Metro region's Potomac Pedalers Touring Club were checking out the route for the 2010 Farm Country Tour ride(canceled because of the accident) organized by the club.

Natasha Pettigrew, 30, A Green Party candidate for the U.S. Senate, died Monday night from injuries suffered the previous day, when she was hit by a Cadillac Escalade. The driver, Christy R. Littleford, 41, even had the audacity to claim she thought she hit a deer or a dog!!!

A cyclist will not stay on the car like a hood ornament!!!!

I thought British drivers had a little more common sense(at least when I lived there 30yrs. ago.). I guess bad drivers are reaching all corners of the globe.

VICTIM NOT IDENTIFIED: Woman struck, killed while riding bicycle in North Las Vegas

By LAWRENCE MOWER
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
A 50-year-old woman was struck and killed on her bicycle Friday afternoon.

Road is too dangerous to ride in that area, you must be on the sidewalk for your safety... No marked bicycle lanes, and they would be no-mans land if they were marked in that area... 45 mile per hour speed limit, most cars 10/15 mile per hour faster than the posted limit...

Officer said bicyclists should be walking their bicycles when on the sidewalk. They should ride them only in a traffic lane. She added that the driver of the truck also had responsibility to yield to pedestrians or other motorists.

Joseph Szymanski, 56, was killed shortly after 3:00pm Tuesday, December 14, while riding his bike in his hometown of La Quinta, California. Szymanski was traveling westbound in the bike lane of Avenue 54 when Tracey Salter, 52, of Merriam, Kansas, struck him while traveling in the same direction.

Witnesses saw Salter hit Szymanski, stop momentarily, then flee the scene. Her vehicle, a Chevrolet Malibu was located three miles away with a smashed windshield and other damage. Cal Fire pronounced Szymanski dead at the scene when they found his body in the bike lane.

Avenue 54 is a popular route with bicyclists. It has two ample traffic lanes in each direction in addition to a bike lane. Visibility is excellent with no curves. Szymanski died approximately 1800 feet from the nearest intersection.

Law enforcement stated they don't believe alcohol or drugs were involved. Prosecutors will charge Salter with felony hit and run. Szymanski's family is preparing for his funeral at this moment.

UPDATED: Salter posted the $25,000 bail set in December but failed to show up for her court appearance on Monday, January 5th. A bail bondsman located her in Las Vegas and returned her to authorities in Indio, CA. According to news story, a judge set her new bail (duh) at $25,000.

In the event she decides to do some unauthorized travels to your community...

Gayle Mamer of Port St. Lucie, Fl: Dedicated cyclist, elementary teacher and a good friend of my wife and I and many, many others. A sudden infection, perhaps complications from the flu, the cause isn't known yet but she was here and now suddenly she is gone leaving a huge hole in many hearts.

Ride with a tailwind for all eternity, Gayle.

Edit: I realize she wasn't a hit-run victim but I think it's fitting to recognize her here.

From what I am aware my great grandad, on my mothers side died at the age of 92 while riding his bike near Liverpool, England. Apparently he was hit and died shortly after. Its been years since I have heard the story of his death but its sad he had to go like that at such an old age!

He was Norwegian and fled the Norwegian Navy many moons ago while docked at Liverpool. If he didn't, would I have been born? I doubt it!

Apparently I am the spit of him, so I hope to live to that age and still be riding a bike and as active as ever!

Ride safe everyone!

Cindy Combs, local inspiration, was killed by a driver who "may have been reading a map." Her husband david is still in critical condition and "nonresponsive."

Tickt for driver: Petty offense, failure to reduce speed to avoid acccident. Possible fine.
Yes, same county as Matt Wilhelm (killed by Jennifer Stark who was downloading ringtones). [email admin delete]

[QUOTE=Geonz;12346287]Cindy Combs, local inspiration, was killed by a driver who "may have been reading a map." Her husband david is still in critical condition and "nonresponsive."

David could see well enough to captain, and the couple used a tandem bicycle to get around everywhere, including to their hospital appointments and to work. Their disabilities left them unable to drive and they depended on their bicycle for transportation. The collision happened on the Bondville Slab north of Interstate 72; this road is straight as an arrow and absolutely flat. This time of year there’s no tall corn to obstruct sightlines. A pair of disabled adults on a tandem bike was likely the tallest thing in the vicinity, and Dave and Cindy always rode with a big orange flag waving over their bike.

Illinois country roads are narrow but lightly traveled — there’s plenty of room for a driver to pull over to the opposite lane to pass. You’d think a farmer’s son from north of Rantoul would know to at least watch for farm tractors on those narrow roads.

In memory of Anthony David Chapman (48), died while riding his road bike Tuesday just gone, April 12. It is believed that the previous night/early morning a car had crashed into a rock wall, dislodging rocks which were left lying on the road. Tony, who was wearing a helmet, hit one of the rocks at 5.35am and was thrown over his bike's handlebars. He died at the scene. A caring, decent family man, junior football coach and all 'round great guy. Condolences to Jenny and his three daughters.

Kimberly Yeong Sil Hull, 25, St. Paul, MN, was killed Thurs 21 April at the U of M campus in Minneapolis when a right-turning truck struck her. She was just a couple of weeks away from graduating. Most cyclist deaths have a sobering effect on me, but this one has hit harder than most. I bike through the same intersection during my commute, amongst all the "fresh-faced college students." Kimberly was not much older than my daughter.
