Texting while driving

Do you remember the case of the idiot girl who killed a rider because she was busy downloading a new ringtone and the even more idiotic and incompetent prosecutor who couldn't find any charge other than improper lane usage?

It all comes down to this:
"If deaths like Maureen's are going to be stopped, the justice system needs to get tough on drivers who take needless risks with terrible consequences."

Just remember, half the population has a double digit IQ.
And they have drivers' licenses.

this is partially the reason why car manufacturers decided against in-car computers... too distracting.
I'd rather people be stopped in the bicycle only lane than driving around with their cells in their hand.

My god... What is so wrong with people that they need to TEXT while driving? If it's really an emergency then pull over and CALL.

On a side note, I saw 2 guy on hayabusas racing right by my house, one guy was on the wrong side of the road, which is a flat road on a hill where a car crash might of happened since you can't see oncoming cars. I just hope whenever I get my license I don't have idiots driving on the road I'm on.

Not hardly... the car manufactures just have not figured out how to make the whole interface profitable to themselves... especially since you can buy a laptop and plug it in anywhere.

Since when do auto manufactures worry about distracting motorists... what with built in radios and multi disc players and even now a game system built in to the dash. Oddly enough, safety features had to be mandated by law. (Oh, a few manufactures did put in seat belts and air bags voluntarily... very few.)

Well, you see, this time there was another CAR involved, not a cyclist... Perhaps if the idiot girl you referred to ran into another car, the prosecutor might have suddenly found tougher charges to press.

Texting is the tip of the iceberg in this case. With Crack-berries, and all those other data intensive mobile computers popping up like weeds - it's gonna get a whole lot worse before it gets better.

I mean what's the incentive to stop people from multi-tasking while "driving"? Because it saves lives? That's obvious, but it really doesn't mean anything. The companies that make these machines WANT people using them all the time - especially while driving, as that's a big chunk of people's "free time" today. Do you think your congressman is going to oppose the telecommunication industry? That's just not going to happen.

We need a law, or we need to enforce the laws already on the books. However, given the obvious conflict of interest stated above - none of that is going to happen anytime soon .... if ever.

A local lawyer and his wife were killed a month or so ago by a cell phone user.

The young girl dropped her cell phone while texting. They were on the interstate, and while picking up her cell, she crossed lanes, and ran the lawyer and his wife off the road and down over a hill where their auto rolled and both were killed. The chick in the cell phone also crashed over the hill, but was not injured.

How many more have to die, or suffer life altering injuries? How many?

not sure if it's correct, but I read an article that said something like 40% of teens surveyed said they have texted while driving. scary.

Apparently 43,000 deaths a year are not enough to get on the radar of most people.

From what I've heard (I can't provide references here, sadly) the actual number of accidents caused by distracted drivers are not going up.

It's just that 10 years ago, the distracted driver had a newspaper or was doing their makeup or something. A few years ago, they had a cellphone. Now they have a crackberry.

Ban crackberrying while driving and they will just find new ways to not pay attention.

Bluetooth in car + memorize of keypad = no need to keep eyes off road.

Bad texting, but I generally do it when I am slowing down, stopped or just have at least a 5 second gap between car in front of me. Plus, I keep my eyes on the road.

This is part of why gasoline should go up so high in price as to take @50% of drivers off the road.
The automobile culture is a murderous, mad machine and needs to be smashed to bits by any means necessary.

Let me know when people start smashing things so I can put my car away.

I am OK with that part of your post.

This sort of over-generalization is not constructive, even though I admittedly occasionally get very frustrated and feel as you do.

You mean so it takes less fortunate people who can't afford blackberries off the road?

BS... if you're texting... you are going to read the replies. That takes your eyes off the road. Put the darn thing away when you drive, or don't drive... period.

And that "5 second gap..." it was just filled by some idiot in fast sports car that just had to be ahead of you... and just laid on their brakes. That crashing sound you hear is not a sound effect!

To say it again, the only reasonable response to this is to have the police beat and torture texting drivers in public after they cause wrecks. Break their bones and leave them by the side of the road--DON'T take them to hospitals!
