As has been said many times "bike defensively"
A short rant about last eves ride. Go out after work for a short ride before sundown. I have the right of way on a small downhill, straight road, traffic light green ahead-doing a moderate 20-25mph. White helmet, red shirt-I'm pretty visible to all; and lo and behold a p/u coming in the opposite direction makes a left turn right in front of me! HUH?! As I am about to T-bone the side of the truck I am YELLING for the driver to stop, look, his window is open-apparently the guy was in another world. Long story a bit longer, I was able to slow down a bit, but skidded into the side of the truck, hitting it with my left hip and shoulder and falling onto my right shoulder. Bike is unhurt. I am a bit sore, but I don't think the driver would even have stopped if I hadn't started shouting out his license plate number and walked to the side of the road and began to rumage in my bag for a pen and paper, phone, etc. neither of which I had (and I usually carry a phone-for emergencies). Got his number, his explanation, "I did not see you"-my reply, "don't you usually look before turning"-the guy was a bit flustered, and apologetic, but I reminded him that he could have easily run me over, and in the future he should watch the road when he drives or will kill someone. Probably should have reported this-but as there was no injury to speak of; I did not choose to make a federal case of the incident. MORAL of story: RIDE DEFENSIVELY!-many of the drivers on the road have only their radios, ipods, cellphones, hackberries, a/c,..... to worry about-certainly not thinking about bicyclists.

no, actually it was behind him-sun glare had no influence-he just wasn't paying attention-claimed he was from out of town and semi-lost.

This is one of the most common types of scenarios in which motorcyclists as well as cyclists are hit. It's called a Left Cross. Michael Bluejay covers it at bicyclesafe.com
Collision Type #6:
The Left Cross

A car coming towards you makes a left turn right in front of you, or right into you. This is similar to #1, above. Austin cyclists hit this way include Dr. Lee Chilton, John Howell (former president of the Austin Cycling Association), and Janne Osborne. How to avoid this collision:
1. Don't ride on the sidewalk. When you come off the sidewalk to cross the street, you're invisible to turning motorists.
2. Get a headlight. If you're riding at night, you should absolutely use a front headlight. It's required by law in most countries, anyway.
3. Wear something bright, even during the day. It may seem silly, but bikes are small and easy to see through even during the day. Yellow or orange reflective vests really make a big difference. Reflective leg bands are also easy and inexpensive.
4. Don't pass on the right. Don't overtake slow-moving vehicles on the right. Doing so makes you invisible to left-turning motorists at intersections. Passing on the right means that the vehicle you're passing could also make a right turn right into you, too.
5. Slow down. If you can't make eye contact with the driver (especially at night), slow down so much that you're able to completely stop if you have to. Sure, it's inconvenient, but it beats getting hit.

I would add to that: ride centerish and keep a high cadence pedaling (using a low gear so you can still slow down per #5) to be more conspicuous, and be prepared for the motorist to turn in front of you.

The only part I missed was the "Note that you will need to host the images yourself", which is pretty unusual. Anyway, the post is fully in compliance now with both bicyclesafe.com and BF.

I fixed it and then noticed your post. Back on bicyclesafe.com, the image is currently replaced there too, so he's accusing himself of stealing images. The strange thing is he requires you to steal the image in order to use it, not just link to it. Luckily, I already had a copy... And I already referenced his site, so I think I meet the requirements.

Happened to me the other day, only avoided hitting him. I slowed enough and swerved into the left lane to avoid the guy in the convertible and gently yelled, "watch out". Of course, before I said that, the guy in the convertible yelled, [ ] you. Anyway, I went on my way, and this guy apparantly pulled out of the parking lot and confronted me at the next signal telling me to get out of his way. I told him that I had the right of way as I was in the flow of traffic he was turning into to which he replied, "you're not traffic". I corrected him and just began ignoring his cussing and tirade. When he said, "I'll run you off the road next time", I said, "Fine, I'll run you into jail for felony assault." He peeled out and took off with a few choice words. It was a BMW convertible by the way.
