Man, I was in Palm Springs about 10 days ago in 100 degree feet. Whew! That take some getting used to, I guess. Do you take water on your 8.5 mi ride? How much do you drink?
The weather this week has been amazing. Perfect. It sure was 95F and I was loving every second of the ride home. However my toes were chilly this morning riding in at 65F though - evidence my body really acclimatizes to the heat.

During the 'real' summer I keep very well hydrated during the day - several water bottles full. I take a single water bottle on my ride home, but usually only drink a 1/4 of it, mainly to wet the mouth. I hydrate well after getting home.

It is truely amazing how great 95F/20%RH (today) feels compared to 115F/35% (a couple of weeks ago), the later is brutal.

August 2007 was hottest on record with an average temperature of 96F. That includes the highs and the night time lows.

Another thing to point out about riding centerish in a narrow lane (by narrow I mean 10-11ft, not a near WOL) is that motorists approaching see you there from a good distance and immediately realize they can not pass in same lane, this allow them to plan a merge early before slowing down much. The times I have experimented with riding far to the right in such a lane, many more motorists will approach closely, then slow down to your speed as they realize (as most drivers are considerate) that they can not pass safely in the same lane. Then they have more difficult smoothly passing with minimal delay as they are close to you and at your speed.

Why should any cyclist care what a motorist thinks about their cycling? Motorists don't have a clue about that.

To sum up: Caveman see animal, not SUV.

But here is the quote that can provide fodder for a whole new cycling like the animals we are theory:
"Though we are more likely to meet death via an SUV than a charging wildebeest, the results indicated subjects were slower and less successful at detecting changes to vehicles than to animals. "

I have so many problems with car operators while driving my truck at work, I couldn't count them all.
I go home and get on my bike and it's like the cars for the most part are ok, unless they don't see me.

I had this one B___h hang a lewy right in front of me, I barely stopped, if I would have been in the truck she would be pushing up daisies, cuz that Frod don't stop.

That's exactly right. Riding further left makes it clear in no uncertain terms SOONER that they will not be able to pass you without changing lanes, thus giving them more time to plan for it.

Yea, it goes both ways..... my family has six automobiles and 11 bicycles. I've had occasion to experience five cyclists riding abreast during a local organized ride and blocking the entire lane on a blind corner were the speed limit is 50 mph. I was on the lookout for these types of bozos so I missed hitting them but someone that was not as tuned in, might have gotten flustered and a tragedy could have resulted. In my opinion they were being irresponsible. There was simply no reason why they could not have been riding single file, on the very ample shoulder, that was paved and clean. This is out in the country, where the roads are narrow but paved shoulders exist. On the other hand, there have been times while on my bicycle, I have had auto drivers purposely pass me, way too close, when there was nobody coming in the other lane and they had ample time to swing wide and pass safely. I ride and drive the very same roads and have for over 30 years, riding solo and during organized events and it still amazes me how ignorant and foolish cyclists and motorists can be.

Good one.

I suggest the slight modification:

i 'AM' moving over a couple feet..... followed by a grin.

Give them a little riddle to work out.
