Scary rider story

I drive to work in a sort of rural area -- winding, hilly two lane road with no shoulder, no street lights, and between the edge of the pavement and a drainage ditch there's maybe 2 or 3 feet of rough grassy turf. Speed limit varies from 40-45. I guess some people go a little faster. There's not many places to pull off, there's a church at the top of one hill, but mostly residential or woods along this probably mile and a half or 2 mile stretch. This guy is out there at 6:30 am, no lights (or reflectors that I can see) riding (with traffic) on that little bit of turf next to the road. We've discussed him in our shop safety meetings, and someone said he goes down to a place at the business section and gets coffee. If I thought I could catch him at the church parking lot, I'd be tempted to buy him a flashing light, but don't know if he'd use it--it's not like he couldn't afford one. It's just a hazardous situation, and I think most of us are really only paying attention because we've seen him several times already, or we are looking out for deer, which are also a problem in the area. Any comments?

find him, ask him if he wants to talk about bicycles with you, then offer him the LED blinkie gift, along with your e-mail and phone # so he can contact you in case he wants to talk or needs free batteries.

Just posted this on my lj ride journal:

"Coming home late last night I turned off the route 50 onto the service road at the edge of our neighborhood. There are no street lights in that stretch, but I saw a shadow move across the road ahead of me. I slowed, and as I got closer I saw a guy on a bicycle weaving across the road - no lights, no reflectors, no helmet, wearing black, riding on the wrong side and talking on a cell phone.
Shake my head and drive on."
