So I guess that driver hasn't heard of a reverse gear? Seems like an idiot to me; tries to make an illegal turn, almost causes a collision, and manages to be boxed in by one bicycle. At least he got a ticket for being stupid.

Yup that usually is the case, we just let the idiots go, and yet again reinforce bad driving habits...

There are just too many cyclists for this kind of jack*****ed driving...and yet it happens everyday no fail.

they really need to come down on this type of stuff, I think apathy from the public and police is whats creating this cycle of careless driving.

edit: I as also angry that they kept insisting the cyclist "blew a gasket" or had "cycle rage" cmon man...he just about got killed and was proving a point...he wasnt going to gun the guy down. if anything the driver had the driver rage trying to make the turn.

He was daring the driver to run him over. I'm not saying he shouldn't have been pissed, but to stand in front of and yell at the guy for several minutes sounds like road rage to me. What would you call it if a guy in a car or on a motorcycle did the same thing to another driver that almost hit them? Road rage.

nah he did it to teach mr illegal turn a lesson...lesson taught...hes not some psycho road raging biker...this is my point...they are more and more trying to frame all bicyclists as road raging psychos.

Road rage to some extent in a general definition (being in a rage while standing in the road), but not a hand laid out in anger or any pounding on cars, so no foul... he stood his ground where no car was legally supposed to turn. He stopped the driver from performing an illegal maneuver, I too have stood my ground at the intersection where no right is allowed by cars. Maybe the driver will look at the signage in the core (that's a damned busy intersection) next time. And being ticketed by bike cops after the fact is the icing on the cake. WORD...

Great story! He did exactly as I would have done and have done a few times.

Recently, a soccer mom on her cell phone in a Lexus SUV sped through a red crossed the lane and almost creamed me---and this was right in front of 52 Division in downtown Toronto. I didn't even have to pedal hard to catch her at University and when she responded to my question about why she almost creamed me, she gave me the finger, so I moved my bike in front of her and stayed that way through the full cycle of the light (I know, I inconvenienced some folks behind her, but they did manage to change lanes and make it through). I didn't rant at her or anything, just calmly advised that if she was in such a hurry that my life meant nothing to her, then I would cost her ten times the amount of time she thought she would have saved. Funny thing is, she wouldn't have saved any time by stopping at the first red and proceeding at a safe speed because the next intersection would have been green by then. As it was, it cost her a good 5 minutes.

I absolutely love the part where the bike cops nailed the guy. Poetic.

Been years since I got that worked up. Back in my 20s I was that guy. Probably would have just punched the car and kept biking if the timing was right. Now, I just do all I can to avoid the crash and bike on. I try not to let every idjit ruin my day. Lot's of idjits out there. I wish I could see just one of them get a citation tho.

Why was the turn illegal?

In downtown areas certain turns are illegal in order to reduce the likelihood of gridlock-type situations, or make it safer for whatever reason. If you go downtown in any major city this is pretty common.

Yonge and Bloor is no left turn both ways, any hour. No right turn on red from Yonge. No Right turn from Bloor on red. Also any car caught in the intersection can be fined, yellow hatch mark marks where you aren't supposed to be when your light is red.
It's like this for most of Yonge st.

Police can only give a warning if no criminal act is commited, so I guess they waited for him to make the turn so they could ticket him.

Curious, how would an out of town or out of country visitor know about this a "no turn situation?"

These sort of "unique" markings on the street situation are one of the bigger arguments for those of the Vehicular Cycling agenda to cite as an "issue;" the problems of different markings on the road and the different laws as they pertain to those markings... further, this appeared to stop a motorist from making a normal vehicular turn... <sarcasm_mode_on> oh heaven forbid... <sarcasm_mode_off>.

My point of course is that all sorts of different markings DO indeed exist, and if motorists can't deal with such roadway instructions then it is they that have the problem.

Now on the other hand, poorly designed markings such as narrow bike lanes are just that... poorly designed.

The markings are traffic signs mounted right beside the actual traffic light if memory serves correct.
Nothing wonky or hard to read as we get alot of out of towners. Traffic law is a suggestive science here in the core of downtown, as actual enforcement of traffic code is virtually nil.

The interface is a bit hard to use, as the X doesn't 'snap' to the roads very well.

Well, in North America the signs were unified so that most people will be able to understand what the signs meant. There are a few localized exceptions in each region. Like no right on red in Quebec.
But the signs should be quite clear to anyone who took a driver's exam and passed.

Yellow hatch marks in the intersection were added with signs that said you could be fined if you were caught in between. All to help with congestion and to tell drivers that you aren't supposed to block the intersection NY rush hour style.

Actually, I just remembered that the delivery truck drivers really hate downtown with all the one ways, no turns and congestion trying to make it on time.

A similar thing happened to me 2 days ago. I lost it worse than the guy in the video. I started wondering if I was at fault for crossing the street in the crosswalk while riding my bike.

The main reason there are no right turns (even on the green) during the day is that there are hordes of pedestrians crossing this street. I'm surprised the motorist was even able to attempt this turn without killing a child in a stroller or running over a dozen pedestrians or more.

So I was by there yesterday (on foot). There are no left turns and no rights on red from any direction any time. Foot traffic is very heavy there pretty much all the time.

This intersection was recently proposed as a "scramble" light-cycle candidate.

As a sidebar, the Harvey's (and everything else on the SE corner) is closing next week, they are about to begin construction of the 80-storey one Bloor East building. Cement trucks anyone?

Man that whole strip of Bloor is becoming a nightmare. From the ROM east the road is just collection of bust pave and craters( i will not call them potholes, they're too damned big) :)
