Accidents - Rare or Routine

Hey guys,

I had my very first cycling accident with a car on Saturday after cycling in Cambridge (UK) for over 3 and a half years. I was just wondering how many other people have a had a close encounter and intimate encounter with part of a car...

Now I wouldn't say I'm a bad cyclist, I drive too so I can usually read the road well and I'd be inclined to put Saturday's crash down to bad luck and driver error, you know just one of those things but does anyone have any personal pearls of cycling wisdom they fancy sharing? I have to admit I'm slightly curious whether most of the people here have had some form of accident or not, guess I just want to feel that these things can happen even if you're careful.

To his credit, the guy who hit me stopped to help me out. He was very apologetic and has admitted that the accident was his fault and is paying for the repairs to my bike. Fortunately I wasn't seriously hurt, just some bruising to my shoulder and ribs.

Does anyone have any experiences they fancy sharing?

My personal definition of "accident" is something that occurs that could not have been prevented.

I'd venture to bet that most car vs bicycle occurences are incidents and not accidents. Something that the "at fault" person was doing (or should have been doing) probably contributed greatly to cause the incident to occur.

With that said, I believe car vs bicycle "accidents" are very rare however incidents are way to common.

I'd figure they're rare, kinda like car accidents, I've known people that have tangled in cars, and I haven't even really come really that close on bike or in a car.
Luck? Awareness? Meh, can't tell exactly.

However I can't think of anyone I know telling me of when they've tangled with a car on a bike. Can't think of it being all too frequent.

Considering the amount of miles I've ridden, pretty rare indeed. I can't think of any accidents, just incidents.

Left hook in daylight 1972

Hit by a VW van coming out of a parking lot, bike crushed, tire marks on my right leg from where I rolled out. 1973

Headon by drunk cyclist at night 1974

Then I got more cautious.

I've also been attacked by motorists a few times, but that's a bit different. Never hit.

Zero from 1974 to 2008. Just a few minor solo incidents due to inattention.

I have what I call "close calls" but they really aren't that close. They are close for ME, but wouldn't make most people even bat an eye if you take anything possible into account.

I hope it's my skill and not luck because luck runs out. Skills can only get better.

Glad to hear that all this stuff is pretty rare, guess incidents (and mine classes as an incident based on the above) happen from time to time. Got the bike back from the shop today and the guy who hit me has just been over to my place and paid for the repairs so all is well. I'm just happy i wasn't too badly beat up by it, just a little bruised. Ah well, stay safe all,

Been right hooked. No damage other than paint and bruises.

Been hit by motorist making left after we both stopped on quiet residential streets at a stop signs facing each other. Crushed seat stays and rear wheel.

Been hit by a motorist that stopped at a stop sign and then took off just as I was right at his fender... I had ROW and motorist was ticketed. Totaled bike and cyclist was taken to hospital for observation and x-rays and later had surgery to fix broken face.

Then I too got more cautious.

I've also been attacked by motorists a few times, but that's a bit different. Never hit.

Zero from 1984 to 2008.

Have done long tours. Used to be car free.

Way too rare to cause fear. Common enough to suggest caution.
