Portland's mixed bag
Election results indicate that Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams has won the Mayor's race in a landslide victory. Adams has been a strong advocate for cyclists and cycling in Portland, and will now be positioned to lay the groundwork for the 21st Century American city.
Two council positions were also up for election, with THREE strong cycling advocates running for those seats. Sadly, it appears that those seats will be filled by candidates firmly rooted in the past.
Nevertheless, Portland will now have the leadership in the Mayors office, if not amongst the Commissioners themselves, to promote the bicycle and transit-friendly policies that will wean us off our American addiction to oil.
Congratulations Sam, and Portland!

Yup. At least one of our members works there. They even have a South Portland.

To be fair, Portland was named after Portland, Maine, on a coin toss. If the coin had turned the other way, it would have been "Boston, Oregon."
And yes, this is great news for Portland, and will allow Portland to really set a great example in innovation for a car-free (or at least car-lite) future.
