Fixed that for you, Autozone!

I saw that one. Terrible placement. Not good content as well. Just what we need, more 75 Gran Torinos on the road.

The Autozone commercial is anti-bike in the same manner that one of the LBS up here has an advert that is anti-car. (The backdrop is the priceboard from a gas station, and the text of the advert tells people how the advertised commuter bike is only costs about 6 tanks of gas.) Target your advertising to the appropriate demographic; it's a simple principle.
That being said... Who was the marketing genius

Why so touchy? It's a commercial about a kid fixing up his first car, that's all.

not much different than a diet pill commerical on the food channel, or a prius commercial during an episode of "Trucks!"

Let it go.

I agree, why does everyone get so upset about anti-bike commercials? Are we all Geico cavemen?

Hell, they were right. If you want to save on gas, buy a bike.

Of course people will think such a suggestion is audacious, but I'd feel the same way about wasting my money on 20 gallons every week of a product that costs more than milk gallon per gallon...

Yep.

I'm sure that last line-- "Next time I go to the parts store, at least it won't be on my bike"-- really went over well with the Tour de France fans.

Anyone who is watching the TDF on Versus without some electronic means of skipping the never ending commercials every 5 minutes is a glutton for punishment and deserves to be insulted. I have never seen such a TV festival for commercials with so little content in between ads.

In the commercial, the young kid finds a car dumped on the side of the road with a sign on the window that reads " if you can fix it, you can keep it " .... (or something to that effect) ... so he gets on this bike and rides to autozone at night to buy parts for it...

My comment to that commercial was, "WTF is wrong with riding a bike, punk?"

Other than that, I don't care.

Some of my bike tools came from A-Z....

God Lord, are we so insecure as to be offended by a television commercial?

Here's a counter-situation. Recently, I had to go through a long series of car repairs, which I had done at the Pep Boys. (I figure that even if I'm not driving my car most of the time, it still should be in good condition, especially emissions-wise.) One result of my frequent visits to the shop was a friendly relationship with the manager, who was highly interested in alternative fuels and alternative transportation methods. He also mentioned that one of his mechanics rides a bike to work every day.

He wanted to see my bike, and I just showed it to him today. One of the mechanics came out and said that my bike was probably far more reliable transporation than the car I drive. The manager also wants to see the electric motor, which will hopefully be installed in the next week or so. He already sees a future beyond gasoline-fueled vehicles, and just wants to know how the next breed works.

I've read some bad reviews of the Pep Boys, but this experience was a big (Did I mention that I got a lot of free mechanical work there until they corrected the overall problem?)

It's a '75 Ford that you found abandoned on the side of the road. Wanna bet that you won't be going to Autozone on a bike any more?

I didn't find this commercial to be particularly anti-bike. Although it did suggest that a biker might want to use another form of transport than a bike on occasion, it did not show bikers as "losers" or biking as undesirable, which was the problem with some of the other commercials mentioned on this board. *This guy* is smart enough to fix up and abandoned car with a few parts from Autozone.

I do think that it's funny that they suggest he'll be back...

Actually, I think the commercial intends that all bikers are on their way to Autozone to buy parts for junk cars they bought on the side of the road.

Heh...

I thought the commercial was funny.

Of course, and ironically, he was using the bike for pure utility -- which a lot of people still can't seem to fathom.

Exactly. Kid better get a scooter or something if he doesn't want to ride his bike to the parts store.

Stop the hate. If you've ever been 16 and a male, you'd understand the boy's predicament. I persnoally hate going to the auto parts store on my bike. Hauling a radiator back on a bike is hell.

They're the kind of gullible people that are easily duped into thinking that advertisements reflect reality, and are exactly the kind of people that ads are aimed at.
