After 28 years, murder charges in boy's death

A "Cold Case" from 28 years ago:

Quote:
"Jeremy Gorner and Matthew Walberg, Chicago Tribune
October 29, 2008

In 1980, Ronald Rice stood before a judge and said he couldn't forgive himself for his role in a hit-and-run that killed 11-year-old Edwin Gulbransen of Oak Forest. Rice, who had turned himself in, then was sentenced to 6 months in jail for fleeing the scene of an accident and hiding the boy's body..."

Read it again. He was sentenced to six months in 1980. Now they are looking at the case again, perhaps to try him for first degree murder. I guess the idea is that maybe he assaulted the kid, ran over him with the car, hid the body, and then claimed it was a traffic accident.

How does this work with regard to double jeopardy?

The double jeopardy law may be this driver's defense. In America, no-one can stand a trial twice for the same crime.

What I hope is; maybe other homicidal drivers will face time in prison, even if many years have passed.

There was a cyclist killed in my home town, back in 1988. The kid who ran her over was in her home-room class in the high-school. And the "accident" happened ten miles from the school. I'd like to see him in a prison uniform. The kids father was a corporate lawyer, made $600,000 a year. Jealousy was the probable motive. There was a partial "ghost bike" in front of the high school for ten years after (set of Sugino cranks pinned to a utility pole with three inch drywall spikes). There is currently a paint-stenciled bike on the side of the deli across the street from the school.
I'd like to see the [expletive deleted] go to jail. If you have an "accident", you hit someone at random, not a girl in your high school class.

He was sentenced for hit and run. He cannot be tried again for hit and run. This will be his first trial for murder - so NO double jeopardy.

My guess on this guy: he is a child sex preditor. He was not lost as he previously claimed, he pulled his U-turn to follow the boy, used his car to knock the boy off his bike in order to kidnap him; but ended up killing the boy. The killer is in jail now serving a 60-year prison sentence for sexual assault. He was probably dumb enough to tell his cell mate what really happened. The cell mate made a deal to testify against the killer, Ronald Rice.

Or maybe he really was just a dumbass college freshman who didn't have the worldly experience to stay calm and panicked when there was a accident that wasn't actually his fault...
And the current jail time could be from date rapeing some woman at a frat party or 5.

Really I don't see anything in that article indicating the devious planning you suggest...

Wouldn't randomness allow for the possibility of hitting a girl in your classroom?

There is no double jeopardy problem here. He was not charged with homicide originally, so he was never placed in jeopardy for an offense related to the death.

They do for repeat offenses, which I can def see happening over time with the frat boy mentality. Guy gets into a pattern of thinking he's a 'player' where there's apparantly no consequence; till one girl speaks up eventually, others come out...

Nope, this is the internet, I don't care enough about internet-rep or internet-dollars to place a wager.

Did you read the article? He was in jail for molesting a 12 year old boy, not drunk raping girls. Although I honestly don't know which would be worse.

The top half of it.
Not the same part that you read at the bottom.

I'd say raping a boy is worse than girls, since that would be homosexual on top of being ****.
But being a hit and run cager (Murderer!) is worse than both.

He'll probably only get a fine for the hit and run...WTF is up with that? I'd think the penalty for the murder ought to be much much worse than the 60 he already served for the ****.

Which makes you sexist for valuing boys over girls.

It depends on the severity of the hit and run I think

Read the article, both the original and the updated versions stated that he got 6 months for the hit & run/hiding the body.

Gonna make the "It's true until you waste the time to prove otherwise" argument a staple around here?

Rice would have been released from prison in four years on the other charge of deviate sexual assault of a 12-year-old boy in 1982. He was convicted of that crime in 1984.
