"A man who police say faked a bike injury as a way to attack a woman Saturday night on the University Bridge was charged Wednesday with second-degree attempted kidnapping and felony harassment.

A 25-year-old woman was on the north end of University Bridge about 3 a.m. Saturday when she saw William Schumann lying next to a bicycle. Cars were swerving to avoid him.

The woman put her emergency flashers on, went to see how she could help, and found Schumann moaning and moving his legs as though injured, according to court documents.

As she reached out to him, police say, Schumann grabbed her by the hair and threw her face down on the hood of her red Kia Spectra. He ordered her to drive downtown or he would kill her, according to court documents.

Schumann, 38, listed his last address as the Compass Center, a building for homeless and poor people in Pioneer Square. He has a history of failing to appear in court and has seven warrants since 2001, according to court documents.

The woman kicked to get away from him, got into her car and tried to lock the doors. But police say Schumann pulled her out by her hair, put her in a headlock and said he would kill her.

Schumann finally stopped when a man pulled over to help and found him with his buttocks exposed and the woman's skirt hiked up to her waist, according to court documents.

Police, who were alerted by another driver's 911 call, said they found the woman bleeding from her nose and missing clumps of her hair. Officers reported finding a folding knife in Schumann's jacket pocket.

Schumann, who has a DUI conviction in California, pleaded guilty earlier this year in Seattle Municipal Court to second-degree property damage, first-degree criminal trespass and theft.

He told police he didn't attack the woman, saying her boyfriend assaulted her, even though she was driving alone. Schumann is being held on $250,000 bail."
