You should view the "Just take the lane" advice with a grain of salt. There are folks around here who think riding around in the middle of the road and blocking traffic is some kind of miracle cure-all. In your shoes I'd do some reading and some thinking before heading in that direction.
Having said that, there is no reason to go riding off into the ditch to allow cars to pass.

What im going to do is pick up a cheap speedometer so I can know when i should be in the middle, and when i can be on the side.

If you look closely you'll note that he is not "persecuted" but "prosecuted". So apparently whatever problems he set himself up for have already been adjudicated.

I would advise you to get a wireless unit (around $50 for a cateye) that is removable so you can take the display unit off of your bike when you go to school... if you forget it, then it will get ripped off by another kid. =)

If you're going over the speed limit, stay in the middle of the lane. The cars behind shouldn't be going faster than you. And you'd be more likely to get a speeding ticket, which is quite an accomplishment on a bike.
