    Wow !
    Unbelievable.

To digress and create disharmony in your thread, I will opine
those child carriers attached to lane taking riders are only marginally
are only marginally better than this.

^^ Same thing. Keep them on MUPs. When a time trialing roadie hits them
the poor kidlette will fare better than being clipped by the bumper of an SUV.

And for those in communities not serviced by an extensive network of MUPs?

this is quite evil and mostly stupid of her to do... but I don't even consider this a drop in the bucket to the number of kids that have been killed in cars because their parents didn't fasten them to the child seat or regular seat belt properly...

Amusing how the article makes a very good point with an excellent argument for the most part (I agree wholeheartedly - this woman is a brilliant example of an idiot) - then conveniently twists it into an excuse to point a generic finger at cyclists in general in the last two paragraphs:

He said many of the city's cyclists needed to wake up to themselves.

"Every day of the week we see an adult blatantly breaking the law," Insp Waters said.

P.S.: How much do you want to bet she was using some plastic toe clips and nylon straps to boot?

Should she have the most expensive cycling cleats? What's wrong with toe clips?

Absolutely nothing - I refuse to use clipless myself, I'm a hard-core user of MKS toe clips and leather straps. I suggested plastic toe clips because they're prone to bending under your foot when you catch the pedal over to slip in (as if she isn't finding enough distractions).

The idea that she should only be on a MUP or sidewalk is stupid. Just as stupid as the idea that, that is where all cyclists should be restricted to, all the time. Sidewalks are much more dangerous. MUPs are usually not destination oriented.

Looks to me like she doesn't even have nylon toe-clips. Looks like she's riding on platforms. How horrible for the kid. I bet her frame is not even Ti. Imagine being that kid and being seen on a bike that's not at least full CF, with clipless of course.

The reporter that wrote this article, and the photog "local worker Phill", are a pair of the type of sensationalist idiots, so common in the world of mass media.

Insp Waters said both the child and woman would be seriously injured at the least if they crashed, whether another vehicle was involved or not.
Does Traffic Inspector Bob Waters normally perform his duties based on speculation?

There were trucks going by - they were at arm's length.
She should take care around so many incompetent drivers that don't know how to pass safely. Is that common in AUS?

The main thing she's doing wrong, according to the information in the article, is she's on the wrong side of the road.

It's a blatantly sensationalist article. The fact that I took the time to read it and respond was more stupid than what the woman on the bike was doing.

Show me any statement I made defending the cyclist. You can't. There isn't one. I was merely pointing out that there is more stupidity going on in, and as a result of, that article than just the actions of that one cyclist.

The idea that I was defending her personally is idiotic. You should learn to read, you would have seen that.

Mad skillz indeed. What I see in this thread is a whole lotta...

JesseDuncan:I just love how "cars will be forced to cross the double yellow lines on dangerous limited visibility roads".

I don't want to have a head on but oh god, I HAVE to fling myself into oncoming traffic to pass, theres no alternative!!!

You can quote an entire reply. How nice. Now show anything I stated that showed her actions as safe, or otherwise in a positive light.

I can't tell in this bad photo, but the woman may be carrying the kid in a sling designed for that purpose, rather than simply in her arms. If so, that really makes the article a bunch of sensationalist "minding-everybody-else's-business" BS.

But she's doing it wrong. You're supposed to remove yourself from the gene pool before you reproduce, not take your offspring out with yourself.
