Your link does not work (at the moment). Also, there is no cached version on Google and a search for alternative sources did not reveal any duplicates. Next time, it would be useful if you could copy and paste a chunk of the text, or provide a precis.

Link works for me. There's a video and article about an automated bicycle parking garage in Japan.

Very neat idea, although it would REALLY SUCK if the machine that parks/brings back the bike breaks down. But anything that greatly reduces bike theft is a good thing.

That type of bike garage really needs to be built here in Toronto.

Annoying, maybe. Dangerous? Er.... I'm hoping something got lost in the translation.

Do you know how many of those stupid things they would have to build to accomodate all of the different places I go on a typical Saturday in Davis?

The whole point of riding a bicycle instead of driving a car is that you can park outside the door of wherever you happen to be going rather than find a spot, PAY MONEY (only a moron would think these would be free) and walk six blocks.

I still don't see them building these outside of every door of everyplace I go. And in that case, they are less convenient, especially if urban planners go idiot and see them as an alternative to "unsightly" bikes locked to racks or posts.

A few strategically place garages in urban centers might be good though. You could stow your bike in a very safe place then walk a few blocks to your destination. No, you wouldn't be able to throw away your U-lock, but that doesn't sound so bad, does it?

It is a very nice idea, but would only work with a centralized mass transit system that had useable stops.

For most American cities, there is no centralized area that you commute from/to, if you do have to take a bus/subway/train in part of your route odds are you'll need the bike at the other end.

Some cities are so bad as far as mass transit goes, that you can cross town easier and faster on the bike then you can using the bus or bus and bike. (GR michigan, worse bus system I've ever seen!)

Davis is not Tokyo. Maybe this would be good in Manhattan NYC or maybe Chicago's central city.
But Davis wouldn't need it.
Hopefully too that machine wouldn't jam.
