I couldn't believe it...

Over the weekend, I was in Charlottesville, Virginia, riding back from visiting my dad. I was by the hospital, at the light at the JPA/Main intersection. Turning right onto main, but there's a "No turn on Red" sign, so I waited out the light.

When it changed to green, I started up, and a cab coming down main blew the red light , not only nearly hitting me but also encroaching into the bike lane. However, unbeknownest to me, there was a cop car right behind me. He shortly passed me, top lights going, and pulled over the cab. Yay!

never had this happen on a bike, but it did happen to me in a car. Some guy took exception to the way I changed lanes (he had tried to keep me from changing lanes by flooring it, which I didn't notice in time). He passed me and tried to put me on the sidewalk. The only problem with his little fit was the cop behind us.

There's this intersection I go through sometimes where people are constantly making illegal left turns. The cross street, going from left to right, cannot make the left turn, and it is well marked with no-left-turn signs. That doesn't stop people though, and when they try it, it makes an absolute mess of the intersection. It backs everyone up, people start laying on their horns, etc.

The police know that people frequently make illegal left turns there, so they sometimes set up shop just out of view so they're right there to stop the car that just made the left turn. It's pretty satisfying to see people get immediately pulled over after totally gumming up the works in a very busy intersection.

Funny thing is, the next legal left turn is just two blocks down the road, and it would probably be quicker to get to your destination by doing things legally. Whenever anyone tries to make that illegal left turn, everyone gets annoyed, and no one going the other direction will yield to let that person take the turn. Then they're just stuck in the middle of the intersection, waiting for an opening.

Sorry that happened to you. Some words of wisdom tho: Pay attention to the movements of traffic FIRST, the color of the light SECOND. I am not telling you to run red lights. I am telling you that a green light in no way assures your safety and you might be better off just looking both ways before you cross the street.

Hey, I know that, and did. Main reason I wasn't on his front windshield. He blew the light well after it had a changed; this wasn't a dodge thru a yellow.

But the most important question...did the cop give you three feet when he passed?

Glad you came through unscathed and the cabbie got what he deserved. (hopefully not a warning)

I haven't had this happen to me yet. There is an intersection near my house on a heavily used boulevard where you'll see at least one car run a red (not trying to make the yellow) every few light changes on the east/west part. I can't image how much money is made off that intersection with the camera catching all these people.
