Damn them. I suggest you fire off a tersely worded letter to the Chairman. Make sure to mention your thin skin.

They obviously know that without the expenses of a motor vehicle, you would have a lot more money to invest.

By Gawd that's the last straw!! First thing in the morning I'm marching into my bank (Chase) and closing my account. Perhaps the loss of my twelve dollars and thirty two cents will send a clear message that cyclists can and will not be triffeled with!!

If there's anyplace it's OK to rant a little about an anti-cyclist ad, it's in the advocacy section of a message board for cyclists. That said, I don't see how the ad is anti-cyclist.

use a credit union instead.
get a cheap auto loan.
or maybe they're just trying to build their cyclist clientele?

I would not be surprised if the ad agency hired to cook that one up thought they were appealing to cyclists, without taking into account that Joe Public's perception of a cyclist and a cyclist's perception of a cyclist are worlds apart.

I admit that the ad is weird and ambiguous, but I don't think we should threaten boycotts for weird and ambiguous ads.

I think it's a very positive ADD.
It shows cyclists as responsible type of individuals who save their money and put it in the bank. They don't seem to like giving out loans for cars any more. A good bank knows that internal combustion engines need to go.
but I don't get their angle on why is the guy carrying a bike.
I am guessing that their ADD advisor thinks that carrying a bike is sexy.
So I think that they are experementing with their new ADD campaign:
SAVE MONEY AND LOOK SEXY
What completely eludes me is the writing on the right side of that building that goes, "GET THAT NEW BIKE SMELL"..Anyone**********

These ads have popped up after Chase converted the WaMu banks in California. They have other ads showing various healthy outdoor activities. I believe the message Chase is attempting to make is that they understand "Calfornia lifestyle" so you should bank with them.

I don't see anything negative about the ad, at all. Perhaps if the cyclist was wearing a business suit, and carrying an old beater bike, it might be implying something, but it appears the cyclist is wearing normal cycling clothing, and carrying a normal mountain bike. I think Chase is trying to appeal to cyclists and active folks, as annc indicated.
FWIW, I use a credit union, but have been thinking about opening a bank account, too, so as not to have all my eggs in one basket. Chase is a leading contender, and this ad does nothing to change my mind.

Badly executed marketing on the agency's part. Is it....
"you have extra money as you are smart, modern, car free consumer...."
"you ride a bike and therefore need a car loan?"
It says "get that new bank smell" around the corner.
I found another one with the cyclist that says..
"Let's start banking smarter, California."

I see it as a positive as well b/c negativity DOES NOT fly in advertising.

I don't know what that ad is supposed to mean, but my best guess is that it is trying to attract cyclists rather than demeaning them.

Banks don't care about anybody unless they can hose them with outrageous fees and interest charges...
Fortunately I am not paying to bail them out for their poor judgment. I just get to use my hidden millions to rescue GM and Chrysler instead.

Given the context of the WaMu takeover the other healthy-lifestyle ads, I think this clearly meant as a compliment.
Probably true. I'd add that we need to save the outrage for companies that deserve it.
Another sign that the ads were intended as a compliment for leading a healthy lifestyle. Plus, it shows real respect for cycling customers

The cyclist on the billboard is obviously going to Chase Bank so he can get a fresh, crisp, dollar bill to use as a boot to fix the punctured tire...

Years ago, there was an anti-drunk driving ad, that depicted a middle aged man pedaling along the side of a busy road. The man was wearing a white shirt, tie, and dress shoes. A briefcase was held to the bike's rack by bungee cords. The man was pedaling along, huffing and puffing, looking quite out of sorts.
A voice over came on said something along the lines of "This is Jack. He lost his license when he got caught driving drunk. Don't let this happen to you!" Or, something like that. In other words, Jack was biking to work as a punishment.
I believe this aired in the early 80's. Not really sure. Anyway, it's not the first time that cycling has been shown as something that is punishing, rather than fun.

I can't make up my mind about this one. It could go either way. I'd be interested to hear the intent from the guys at Chase. I'll hold my breath...
