poorly planned shenanigans in vancity.

Some supposed cycling advocacy group in vancouver is organizing a group ride that forces its participants to drive to the starting point and back.

http://districtxii.blogspot.com/2009...ding-hmmm.html

For those not familiar with Vancouver geography, that's a 70km RT trip from downtown to the ride location. To compound the issue, the ride takes place on trails rather than roads, so if you did want to tough out the 35km ride to the starting point, you'd have to do it on an MTB or something of that nature.

Feel free to give them an earful: http://greatrides.ca/node/89

The advocacy group is called the Vancouver Area Cycling coalition.

Is Pitt meadows not in the area of Vancouver/Lower Mainland?

Perhaps residents in and around Pitt meadows might not want to ride down to the city center to go for a ride?

You know, I heard that Lance Armstrong actually rode in a van after completing certain stages in the Tour de France. And rumor has it, he flew from Austin to the start of the race in Monaco.

Forget doping, the guy's a hypocrite.

Wait... they suck because you're too much of a wimp to ride that far?

Looks like a fun ride... way too short for me. Although the extra distance from where you are to the start might make it worthwhile.

Does this go outside your principle or is it too far to ride?

OP, you fail. This VACC event like any other is a family oriented bike ride event around picturesque Pitt Meadows trail. It is not intended to be some sort of commuting ride. VACC as mentioned by previous poster is Vancouver Area.
There are many cycling tours offered by travel agencies where one packs their bicycle on a plane... yes those things that fly on the air to a destination and ride around the foreign country. It is fun. I did that in Tuscany. Fantastic experience. Perhaps OP do not have a car hence the complain.
I fully support VACC and their efforts in promoting bike riding around GVRD (which consists of Pitt Meadows and further east).
FYI, Pitt Meadows is a mecca for roadies and has a few tri or criterium events annually.

You know what is a poorly planned shennanigans in Vancouver? The monthly Critical Mass that has turned into a nuisance to the public. Not to mention tarnishing the image of other road sharing cyclists around GVRD.

It's even worse than Exit stated. Haven't the ride organizers considered that there might be interested cyclists on other planets, who will have to take a friggin' SPACESHIP to the ride?

Talk about poor planning...

Edit: By the way, Exit, the VACC homepage mentions that they one of their local advocacy committees is based in "Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows". Couldn't they be the ones who decided to organize a ride in their own town?

Sorry but the position stated in the op is a big yawn as far as I am concerned. Some people want to ride roads and others want to ride trails, so what? Promoting nice trails should be up there with promoting nice roads. Or maybe the op has a point and all the people that drove to this ride Pittsburgh to DC to Annapolis to DE to NJ to... (mostly trails) should be banned from BF or at least not be allowed to say they advocate for cycling.
