A cyclist was killed here on Tuesday night when he was hit from behind by an automobile and then hit several more times by passing cars.
The official story is that the man was riding at 11 pm on what is a busy freeway where the posted speed is 50-60 mph and was attempting a lane change.
He had no reflective gear or lights and the fact he was not wearing a helmet seems moot considering the severity of the impact.
I think the lesson here is that when one rides at night there is no such thing as too much lighting or too many reflectors and perhaps this would not have happened if the rider had been better equipped.
Regardless of the circumstances... a ghost bike has been placed at the site of the accident.
By this time last year we had placed three ghost bikes... in 2 of the three cases the riders had not followed the traffic rules and in the other a commuter was run down on his way to work in broad daylight by an inattentive and mildly inebriated and overtired driver.

One is too many, but I'm glad the number is less than last year. I haven't heard of a biker killed in DC this year although the number of riders is way up. Car drivers are looking out for bikers. Thanks, car drivers!
My heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.
Most of you know about the bicyclist that died this week at the corner of Lafayette and Maryland. A memorial Ghost Bike will be place at that intersection this Sunday, 8/9, a bit after 6:00 PM. For info on the memorial, go to www.ghostbikes.org
