https://www.desmoinesregister.com/art...90914007/1001/

Quote:
"A 79-year-old Winterset man was charged this morning in the Aug. 30 hit-and run death of bicyclist Mark Grgurich in Warren County.

Paul “Jud” McKinney, 79, is charged with leaving the scene of a fatality, concealment of evidence and failure to maintain control.

If convicted of all charges he faces more than seven years in prison...

....McKinney worked 30 years as a truck foreman for the Madison County road department. His wife, Betty, was recently moved to a nursing home...."

McKinney’s attorney asked that he be released because of an ailing wife, poor health and is a longtime resident of Madison County.

If granted, hopefully he won't be allowed to drive.

This is unfortunate. Mostly because it's an old guy having a bad go of it.

Even I feel for the guy a little.

The comments, so far, are impressively mature for Des Moines.

house arrest. I really wish people would add up the cost of driving to the potential cost of killing an innocent person and realize that taxis really don't cost that much after all.

That attorney is trying to get him, just a slap on the wrist!!!!

In lieu of jail time, he should be given a suspended sentence!!!!

Naw, it's a lock -- you re-test an idiot, they're still gonna BE an idiot.

Was Warren coming from the home he had to put his wife in, possibly still broken up about having to put her there, and so misty-eyed he didn't see the cyclist? If not, the hell with his pity defense.

From the things locals have said about the guy I doubt he was teary eyed. Wouldn't matter. You're supposed to pull over if you need to cry.

Thanks for posting I've been wondering if they'd find him. It's been all over the local DM radio stations for the past couple weeks. The sad thing is, nearly everyone who called in to the stations were of the "he was biking on a highway, it's his own fault" mindset

"Concealment of evidence", he knew what he was doing, he killed an innocent person, he should die in jail.

Oh... how sad, the guy is old and his wife is ailing.

I suppose he should have thought of that before concealing the evidence to a person's death, a person that he killed. 7 years is not long enough....

Folks do not feel bad for this guy. In talking to those who know/know of him, he is the kind of guy who would take his wife, who has alzheimers to the bar with him, sit her in a corner while he plays pool, gets drunk and chases/harasses the waitresses. Most of the waitresses at his favorite hang out do not like or are afraid of him. His wife has on more then one occasion been found wandering around by herself because he would rather chase tail then take care of her. After he hit and killed Mark he was seen at a bar after which he went home, hid his truck and then tried to modify it so it would not be recognizable. The only reason his wife was not in a care facility before now is he wanted control of the money to go chase tail, drink, etc. instead of properly taking care of her. Also from what I understand he has a pretty crass attitude. This does not speak much for the guys character. Please do not think of him as a sweet poor old man, he is anyting but.

His actions, the cover up of his "accident" proves to me what kind of person this guy is.

Isn't Madison County the Iowa county which has policies to discourage cycling - taking down 'share the road' signs that they used to have? I also seem to remember that Madison county DAs refused to prosecute a previous crash resulting in injury of a cyclist.

I have no idea, but if they're doing that. Aren't they leaving themselves open to lawsuits from the cycling population? Particularly IF someone dies as a result?

Don't know about specific policies geared toward anti-cycling or to discourage cyclists. It would be difficult to get an Madison County employee to admit to such, I'm sure. It is the county in which a cyclist was hit while riding with a group of 7 or 8. the driver hit him with an towed anhydrous ammonia tank. The driver left the scene, to return later after getting rid of the evidence, the tank trailer. The county sheriff's office did not investigate fully, like go to where the trailer was to collect/process it as evidence because the driver is a financial baker/support of the Madison County Sheriff. In other words it was classic quid pro quo. I think the driver was merely fined at most. Meanwhile the cyclist is recovering from a broken pelvis, among other things.

Lynch didn't get crap in that case. He was entirely let off the hook after the residents of Madison county pointed out that they don't like cyclists but they do like wealthy farmers.

It was absolutely ridiculous. The DA in Madison county wouldn't do anything.

Seriously, central Iowa is culturally busted. They don't just hate each other over politics anymore. It's anything anyone can hate someone else over now. That's the feel I've gotten after moving away 2 years ago.

I agree it is culturally busted in general, but they do have their moments where they are not. The Iowa State Fair is one of those times. It brings people together and has something for everyone, that is not a bad thing.

My wife and I moved away over 15 years ago in part for the same reason you did. Waht part of Iowa did you move to?

The SOB plead not guilty in a written plea today. He has been free on bond and still allowed to drive. He is supposed to renew his license this month. Knowing the DOt he will still be allowed to drive and kill again. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/app.../NEWS/91012013

UGH....

Any chance of sympathy for an old man with a dying wife went straight out the window upon reading the charge of : "concealment of evidence"

I hope he is convicted and serves every last day of his sentence, then the day he goes free, he croaks....

I hope someone starts getting some justice "outside the courts" before any trial happens.
