You can't be sure it's not safe to drink just because of the sell by date. In my house there is a 2nd test..."Here dad is this milk still OK?" Dad has figured out that anything preceded by "Here dad taste this" or "Here dad smell this" is probably bad and shouldn't be tasted or smelled. (I'm dad)
