Today I pulled out the SAK's saw on three occasions... I only took pics of one of them (forgot to put the SD card in the camera, and had to use the built in memory).

The first occasion was when I cleared some rose branches that were encroaching over the bike/ped/ADA bridge access ramp to a transit center. Odd thing was some lady who had just almost walked into them told me that I probably shouldn't be doing that when I stopped and cleared them. Some people can be pretty dumb. :notamused:

In another location, I noticed that a sidewalk was being encroached on by some low branches. Walked up to the door, and told the owner of the problem. I then offered to cut them back for her. She accepted, and two minutes later, I had a small pile of branches on her lawn (her son will clear them she said), and a free and clear sidewalk. I do this for sidewalks as one of my friends is 6' 4" tall, and legally blind.

Then I found this branch lying in the bike lane as I was nearly home today...

It took longer to photograph the thing than to actually cut it free.

Thanks for all those who are out there doing something to make this place a better one for all.

Sorry, I didn't answer that question earlier (didn't catch that it was about my photo). Yes, those are part of the Yellow Line MAX (Light Rail) tracks in Portland, Oregon. Photo was taken just north of Greeley on N. Interstate Ave.

Update... After the first rain after it was filled with dirt, a park maintenance vehicle drove right through the old hole, and it was immediatly reformed. A few phone calls and an Email or two, and it was fixed again...

This time with asphalt and gravel. I think that this fix will last a little while.

This is how I found this grate after paving crews repaved SW Cedar Hills Blvd., Beaverton. Needless to say, I wasn't amused.

An underpass on the MUP has had about 4 inches of water in a low spot for the past couple weeks. Its obvious it won't evaporate on its own this time of year. With the temperature dropping it would likely end up as a big block of slick ice in a few weeks. So I reported it to the city today so they can pump it out before it freezes.

update: Water had been drained by the time I rode home today.

I am clearing the path overgrowth that was shown in the pictures I posted a couple weeks ago.

Update: The offending overgrowth was finally taken care of by the state.

Took some of the gravel that I collected over the summer and used it to fill muddy depressions in the demand trail that leads to the local transit center...

Old photos of a similar situation...

Tonight, I sent this off to several agencies, the media, and lawyers

I've been bike commuting from PSU to Goose Hollow everyday lately, and I've observed something that makes me fear for my life on SW Jefferson St.

Between SW 14th And SW 16th Ave the bike lane has a serious "washboard" texture to the outer 1/3(ish) portion (this extends into the traffic lane as well). To avoid this uncomfortable ride, cyclists are forced to ride in the lane, or DANGER CLOSE to parked cars in front of KGW's studio at 1442 SW Jefferson St.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6224/...2d988e91f3.jpg http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6228/...064d59162e.jpg
In these photos, you can see faint shadows created by the raised and recessed areas of the washboard.

My fear is that someday, if this isn't addressed, a cyclist will be bombing down that hill on their way to the Goose Hollow MAX stop, when someone unexpectedly exits their parked car. The cyclist then swerves to avoid the crash, or hits the door (and/or motorist), and ends up lying in the traffic lane with a car parked on top of them.

Can something be done to improve conditions here?

K'Tesh 11-11-11 05:43 PM

In looking at the photos I took of SW Jefferson...

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6228/...064d59162e.jpg

I noticed the regular spacing between the highs and lows, and thought that it may be the same kind of problem we used to have on the SpringWashboard Corridor trail... paved over railway lines.

A quick google search later, and I found this:

http://myplace.frontier.com/~trolley503/1904Map.jpg

SW Jefferson did have a street car or trolley on it in 1890. Any bets where those tracks were located?

K'Tesh 12-24-11 12:52 PM

OH ****!!! There's Stairs There!!!

The other night I was riding in SE Portland, when I decided to try for the Hawthorn Bridge to get across the Willamette River. I found myself on SE Salmon heading for the the Eastbank Esplanade. The trail is located on the west side of an underpass, and the access to the trail has visual obstructions on both sides.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7152/6...d645949e56.jpg
Where's the stairs? Dead Ahead!

Because of the obstructions, I didn't see the upper section of the trail and very nearly rode off the steps that separates it from the lower section of trail (Here's the location, and the street view).

Fortunately, at the last moment, I remembered that I had put a warning sign up during one of the bike events that I participated in (I think it was "The Hottest Day of the Year" ride ('09)). I also remembered that every organized ride I've ever done through there, how the organizers constantly have to man that location to prevent crashes. I managed to make the turn before the ground could out from under me.

Sent off a couple of emails with the photos, and made a call to the PDX Parks Dept.

Yesterday, I was called back and told that they are dispatching a crew to see what can be done about the problem. I recommended that Tactile Paving material and reflective striping be used at the top of the steps, as well as reflective materials being put on the vertical portions of the handrails.

Some idiots broke a bunch of (maybe 10) glass bottles on a segment of the MUP near the high school. Too much for me to sweep, so I called the non-emergency police # and the township secretary and gave them an account of the vandalism and how it poses a hazard to cyclists and pedestrians and where it was. Hopefully it'll get cleaned up. Unlikely, but I hope the idiots get caught one day.

On more than one occasion, I've had to call Non-Emergency Dispatch for issues concerning trail safety (lost/abandoned/stollen bikes, flooding), and after hours maintenance issues (large trees blocking the trail, etc.) and then I spend a lot of time explaining where the trail is to the Dispatcher. They are completly locked into "nearest cross streets" and often don't know where the trail is located.

My fears are what would happen if it was necessary for someone to call 911 for an actual emergency. What would happen if they weren't from the area, and not familiar with the cross streets. Myself, I have ZERO idea what the name of the streets that flank the trail are, unless they are on my commute route. How would I be able to get an Ambulance, or a Police response to the trail?

I'm suggesting that the dispatchers get training (and maps) on the all of the trails in the region. I'd also recommend improved signage so someone might have an idea of where they are without having to leave the trail itself and find a cross street.

Firstly K’tesh I’d like to thank you for your efforts helping your local cycling community. The more cyclists the better :thumb:

Now I know you made this post yonks ago but perhaps I can shed some light on the points you raise. Many a moon ago I worked for my states Ambulance service both on-road and in communications. The priorities for taking a call are (in order) a physical address 2. a contact phone number 3. the nature of the emergency. The rationale is very well thought out. Many think that they can come up with a better system but fall down at the “OK do it” stage. In fact, there is literally tens of millions of dollars in it for the person who does.

However I digress. Without a physical address the comm’s operator can not move on in their mandated questioning. Where do they send the crew? They need an exact location. I’ve fielded calls where people didn’t know where they were. They needed help but couldn’t give an address. Extremely distressing for everyone involved.

But yeah. I like your suggestions. Perhaps poles along the paths with reference numbers for the emergency dispatcher that’d indicate the nearest cross streets or entrance?

Good Update:
I got an email thanking me for notifying the township. A crew must have been called out, because the path is now glass free!! I thanked the township contact of course.

I told him that ODOT has been notified of their liability, and asked him to tell anybody hurt here that they are aware of the situation. He told me that he needs a new trailer ;)

What's worse? Poor location and design means that runoff from the Highway doesn't even go to this drain. It flows through his driveway.

Today I put some Chalk Markings on a pathway, reading "CICLOVIA".

Fargo Wolf 01-09-12 04:53 PM

While headed downtown on my bike, I stopped and moved a couple of wheelie bins out of the middle of a new MUP that runs along one side of a residential street. They weren't left there deliberately and the owner wasn't home. The grabber claw on the garbage/recycle truck has only a very limited reach.

Greetings K'Tesh,

Thank you for bringing your concern about the trail intersection of SE Salmon Street with the Eastbank Esplanade to our attention. We agree the intersection has some potential hazards for someone entering the area who is unaware of the cross traffic or at a high rate of speed, but we generally believe that all intersections require both bicyclists and pedestrians to slow down and pay close attention. However, we have taken a closer look at this particular intersection following your raising this concern.

Your concern was that cyclists might go over the stairs that run parallel to the western side of the Eastbank Esplanade after they cross the north/south running trail as they approach from SE Salmon Street. That we are aware of, this has never been a site of an accident, nor until now have we ever had such a concern brought to us in the roughly 10 years since the Eastbank Esplanade has been in use. SE Salmon Street extends under the freeway through a rather large and open covered space with a variety of obstacles that naturally encourage one to slow down and pay attention. The area has a variety of lights, including an overhead street lamp illuminating the stairs that are of concern. Understandably, during events, the congestion and different use patterns are different than everyday use, and could merit signage to prevent confusion or problems.

Still, we’ve given it some thinking, prompted by your voiced concern. Following a site meeting last week with our planner, engineer and operations supervisor, we made an immediate improvement prompted by your concern – we have removed some of the lower limbs of the trees/shrubs in the planter bed to the south of this intersection, to allow for greater visibility of northbound trail traffic.

We are also considering putting in some pavement markings on the eastern side of the Eastbank Esplanade trail that warn cyclists of the coming intersection as they pass under the freeway on the extension of SE Salmon Street toward the Eastbank. First, we want to discuss this with colleagues at PBOT and the original trail designer, who we have been working with for some months to address some different bike/pedestrian safety concerns along the Eastbank Esplanade, Waterfront Park and the RiverPlace Esplanade. As part of that effort, we will soon be putting up larger, more visible signs warning bicyclists to slow down on the esplanade.

Again, we thank you for bringing your concern to our attention.

Sent Out Another Shotgun Email...

Shotgun E-mail: \ˈshät-ˌgən ˈē-ˌmāl\ Noun.

Definition of SHOTGUN E-MAIL
  1. Electronic mail sent to numerous agencies, newsmedia, bloggers, politicians, and lawyers to inform them of the frustration that a single agency/agent has caused after ignoring repeated warnings of a hazard.
  2. Means of drawing attention to issue over the head of the ignoring agency/agent.

"Seen & Heard"

Somewhere just east of the tunnel on what I suspect is SW Canyon Road (could be SW Jefferson), is a series of "plugs" that have been removed from the road surface, and immediately in that area is a storm drain catchbasin in the painted bikelane/shoulder that intrudes well into the bikelane. This catchbasin has a nasty lip from a poorly done overlay (no attempt to "feather" the edge), which I fear could cause a cyclist such as myself to crash if they were to hit it while trying to avoid other traffic on their left. This is a regular part of the ZooBomb Hellway route.

In the google map street view linked below, the drain is located in the shadow of the tree. I haven't had an opportunity to take any pictures of it myself... yet.

http://g.co/maps/75u9t

On SW Barbur Blvd (across the street from 3007 SW Barbur Blvd.) is another deeply recessed catchbasin that intrudes into the bike lane. I've complained about this drain for years... (and at least 3 bicycles ago.)

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3161/2...65108631c8.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3152/2...ca14d3d39e.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3229/5...2b4d745a97.jpg

Since the first photo (taken in 4 years ago in 2008 ), I've had 3 new bikes. Oh, and the drain's useless (it's completely plugged up).

It's been 4 years... Any idea on how long it will take before something (shy lines, abandonment and fill?) gets done (other than a traffic cone being stuck in it)?

Sent this in today...

I reported these grates last year during Winter Term at PSU... Well, it's been nearly a year, and NOTHING was done.

These grates have gaps that are so wide and deep that they easily can capture my bicycle's front wheel and prop the bike up. SW Clay isn't a quiet street, and a falling cyclist could be thrown into traffic. A wheelchairist crossing SW Park here at SW Clay could get caught and trapped as a car turns NB on SW Park.

Two are located on the eastern SW Park (northbound), and one on the western SW Park (southbound). In some of the photos, I've placed my Victorinox Swiss Army, Ranger Model, Pocket Knife to show scale. The knife is narrower than my front wheel, but wider than a road bike's wheel.

Before someone gets hurt here, I'd recommend some kind of shim be welded in place to prevent wheels from getting caught, or better fitting
grates be installed.
