Bad things in the road

Today on Stock Island I actually stopped my bike to help several motorists clean about 7 million roofing nails off the northbound lane of US Rt. 1. Must have come off a contractor's truck. So I'm out there in my sandals kicking nails aside and thinking of K'Tesh. This has to be the worse thing I've ever come across while riding. What's the most dangerous thing you've seen in the road? (for a bike rider)

P.S. K'Tesh, you're becoming a bad influence on me.

I stopped and cleaned an entire box of nails out of the road myself once. And I've stopped and moved fallen small trees out of the road, that were completely blocking the road. I once removed a spike from the road, it was probably about 12 inches long.

How many nails did you pocket for your next JAM encounter?

Here in Illinois the potholes are large enough to swallow all other dangerous objects.

I've stopped to help motorists push their cars off the main road (and it really helps when the release all brakes), pick up items that have blown off of their cars.

And I've noticed in a lot of cases that the person on the bike is the only one to stop and offer help.

I've also have stopped and helped other cyclists with roadside repairs.

I was in Biloxi, MS, the spring after hurricane Katrina, to help build a Habitat house, and I had my folding bike and rode through downtown and the surrounding area. Debris was everywhere and I soon got a flat. Walked the bike about a mile to get back to our camp. Don't know what I was thinking, to ride through a demolished part of town that was being rebuilt (in spots) without gear to change a flat. So stupid.

About two weeks ago someone shattered two wine bottles right in the middle of the local MUP. That morning there was a large Multiple Sclerosis benefit ride coming through, so I stopped and handpicked up most of the really nasty pieces of glass. Finished just the first wave of cyclists came rolling through.

ROTFLMAO Old Town!

For those who don't know what that's all about, check out the "Advocacy Thread... What Have YOU Done Today??? " Thread.

And to answer your question... The most dangerous thing in the road is MOTORISTS. To defend my position, I offer you the 19 year old from Wisconsin who was too busy trying to find a parking spot to pay attention to the cyclist in his path (He broke my leg in two places, I wasn't cited, he was, and it cost him a lot). Then there's the soccer mom in her SUV who blew a stop sign while driving and talking on her Cell phone who caused a cyclist (who had the right of way) to plow into a bridge's support (I got pictures of the aftermath).

Thanks for helping out on the nails!
K'Tesh

Large rocks that kids had rolled down onto a paved trail where it went down under roads. Riding along in the bright sun a person could easily miss them in the shade. I got them off the trail and found out a Ranger had started from the other end.

Today I had to yell at a very large buzzard feasting on a mangled possum in the
middle of the road.

I did not want to startle the rascal as I passed the carcass, fortunately the rascal
decided to take flight before I reached the remains...

It just came out of nowhere, i swear.
Knocked the beer right out of my hand, too.
It had a really bad attitude, probably because of all
the crap it had to deal with.

I once changed lanes to avoid a full-sized metal file cabinet laying in the fast lane on the expressway. It was on its side and not too easy to see.

I called 911 for that one.
