    Getting (Passenger) Doored

As the cycling season approaches, just wanted to give a head's up to others out there on the road. I'm sure most of us know to watch out the swinging car door of a parked car opening but had an experience last year that makes me want to warn others: Be careful of cars in traffic!!!! Passenger in car opened his door wide at a red light and I came this close to being part of the car. Never gave much thought to this before it happened. Have fun and ride safely all

Good advice. If I were you, I'd rather much be a vehicular cyclist by not passing cars to the right.

Also, you'll never know when cars are about to turn right.

That is another reason, I 'take the lane'. By 'taking the lane', I avoid parked cars and debris on my right and, motorists passing to close on the left.

I'm not sure if that would save you from the kind of "dooring" the OP is referring to in his post. The only time I have ever been doored (more than 30 years ago) was a car stopped in a left turn lane only lane. I was in the next lane over to the right going straight and there was a lane to the right, which was a right turn lane. I couldn't have been riding more "vehicularly" when a door flew open from the left and just knicked my left thigh but man, it hit me so hard I shot across the right lane hit the curb and endo'd onto a fire hydrant.

I've actually have had the passenger both front and rear open their door to varying degrees to yell at me to get on the sidewalk. I have to say that I haven't seen anyone who actually opened their door at a red light.

Maybe the were practicing for a Chinese fire-drill?
