singlespeeds, drinking, and why it sucks
Well I used to be in the BIKING AND DRINKING ARE FUN! camp, but I'm changing my tune. I say that as I sit here with a left collarbone that is broken the whole way through, a face that is a bit messed up, and I'm short sandals, glasses, a cell phone a Yeah Yeah Yeahs shirt and a sweet jacket...
Why?
I really have no idea. I don't remember anything, and in the past 3 days I haven't been able to contact the other two guys I was with. All I know is we rode our bikes down to the brewery/bar. I got on after three beers (note: I've been known to drink vastly more and ride home), went to the second bar (things start to get fuzzy here), am pretty sure I didn't drink though I may have had ONE High Life and then at about 8am Thursday morning I woke up looking at a TV which had the Olympic Track Cycling on, wondering what bar I was at. Well I was in the hospital it turns out, with an IV and strapped to a gurney with a neck brace. Turns out I had been unconcious for nearly 6hrs, had the broken collarbone, etc.
My friends left me since I was out for so long, and hopefully they have attended to my bike, though without a phone I have no way of knowing. So to anyone who decides to drink and ride be careful and think twice... it could very easily have been my last ride, ever.

Ouch! I haven't done that in years...but the story is good. When I was in the Air Force, and young and in the dorms, me and a couple of buddies would get trashed and borrow bikes from the bike rack. No they weren't ours, and yes we returned them. We'd take the bikes and ride over to the base pool and swim and go "chair diving". Then ride back to the barracks. Well one night I hit some loose gravel and ended up in it on my shoulder. I vaguely remember picking little pieces of gravel out of it, and still have the scar to show for it.
