Cyclist stabbed by road rager during group ride

This is just what you need to hear after your holiday ride:

Two cyclists stabbed after holiday ride; one in critical condition

An annual Memorial Day bicycle ride landed three men in the hospital — two cyclists who were stabbed and the suspect who’ll be charged in the attack.

One of the cyclists was in critical condition Monday at Shands Jacksonville, said Sgt. Robert Hurst of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Police did not identify any of the three men Monday.

Hurst said police have varying accounts of what happened just before 11 a.m. in the parking lot of Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Kent Campus.

Jim Wright of Orange Park was among about 25 riders in the front group and said everything started when the cyclists finished their 60-mile route and pulled onto the service road leading into the college — the starting and finishing point for the ride.

A man driving a pickup truck brushed up against one of the cyclists and another rider started yelling at the driver, Wright said.

The driver followed the group into the parking lot, got out of his truck and moved toward one of the cyclists, Wright said.

When the driver, whom Hurst said was in his late teens or early 20s, bumped his chest against the cyclist, another rider punched the driver in the face.

The driver then stabbed the cyclist who punched, and slashed another rider who tried to break it up, Wright said.

None of the witnesses who spoke with the Times-Union saw the knife and Hurst said it was not recovered.

The man then got in his truck and took off. Robert Brown, another cyclist, chased after the truck and yelled the license plate number to someone else in the group, who saved it in his phone and called police.

Wright grabbed a spare tube for a bike tire and wrapped it around the first cyclist’s wounds to try to stop the bleeding until rescue units arrived.

“You can fix anything with a tube and a spoke,” Wright said.

The driver called his father, who went to the scene and told police where to find his son, Hurst said. He was hospitalized with injuries to his face and will be charged with aggravated battery, Hurst said.

The driver is cooperating with police and told his father he was jumped by a group of cyclists, Hurst said.

The two cyclists were among more than 100 riders in an annual Memorial Day ride sponsored by the North Florida Bicycle Club, ride director John McDowell said.

Most of the cyclists who gathered after the ride have their own horror stories about being flipped the bird or getting ice tossed on them by motorists, but that’s usually as far as it goes, McDowell said.

“We’ve had threats like that before,” McDowell said, “but never anything like this.”

Here's a followup story:

Man charged in stabbing at Jacksonville bicycle rally

A 25-year-old Jacksonville man has been arrested after two bicyclists were stabbed in a confrontation Monday at the end of a rally.

Matt Roger Salmons of the 1800 block of Gabin Road was charged with two counts of aggravated battery and one count of simple battery following a confrontation with the group of bicyclists at the end of a 60-mile trip.

The two cyclists were among more than 100 riders in an annual Memorial Day ride sponsored by the North Florida Bicycle Club, ride director John McDowell said.

The group was returning to the Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Kent Campus when one brushed against Salmons, who was passing through the group in his pickup truck. Tempers flared and Salmons stopped and got out of his truck.

In the confrontation, two riders were stabbed before Salmons left.

Police met with Salmons a short time later and were told he stopped to check on the welfare of the bicyclist who was hit and then began arguing with several people. He told police he retrieved a pocket knife and "went to town," according to a police report.

One victim, John Wesley Faulk, 51, of Jacksonville, suffered one stab wound to his stomach and five on his back. He was in fair condition at Shands Jacksonville hospital this morning. The second victim, David C. Elcess, 48, of Jacksonville, was cut once on each arm.

Salmons was injured when he was punched during the fight. All three were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Salmons was being held in lieu of $205,000 bail Tuesday in the Duval County jail.

Well with a $205,000 bail, the police seem to mean business. Also, I would think that the self defense angle will not work not when

1) You follow a guy and start a confrontation.
2) You stab him in the stomach (one stab could be self defense) but 5 stabs in the back are just being berserk.
3) You stab someone trying to break up the fight.
4) You do this in front of a zillion witnesses.
5) Cyclists generally are not that young and often have good jobs, no records, positions in the community. So you can not accuse them of being a "lawless element".
6) Florida is pretty much a "law and order" state so I bet this guy is going to serve some significant time.
7) He is still open to civil suit for damages even if he gets off (and given the reports, I can not see him getting off).

Hmmm, they forgot to add a charge for illegal passing. Florida has a 3 foot law.

Why would they say that the truck "brushed" the cyclist? Would they ever say a car "brushed" another car? Absolutely not (even though a car driver is protected by thousands of pounds of metal and multiple airbags). The car STRUCK the cyclist, plain and simple. This terrible journalism minimizes the fact that the truck driver almost killed the cyclist.

^^^ Maybe 'brushed' instead 'struck' was used to indicate that the collision was minor. It may have been at a slow rate, and not caused any injuries.

I don't think the writer was trying to minimize the fact that a driver almost killed a cyclist; they mention that one of them was stabbed six times, and that both are in critical condition in the hospital.

Often, people choose a word for non-political reasons.

Brushed made sense to me: He didn't strike them hard enough to knock them down, and it was a glancing strike not head on.

You should find something important to get mad about.

'Went to town!"

How stupid can this guy be that he would actually tell the cops, "I went to town with my knife."

Not just that, but he retrieved his knife and "went to town"??!!

Is this actually in the police report?? Can any human adult be that freakin' stupid.

Are some Floridians that stupid??

If he was dumb enough to actually say that-he will go to jail for 10 years or so. Like others said-Fla is very law and order.

I would expect more the "I went to check on the poor cyclist that fell against my truck, and a gang of them attacked me. I had my trusty Boy Scout knife, and I used to to hold off the chain swinging bikers and make it back to my truck..

I'm sure his story will morph into more like the above.

Brushed? Tell me how you can have two cars "brush" without causing major damage? The best I can come up with is "sideswipe", which connotes something very different than "brush". You don't brush your hair with a car fender.

I hope the stabbing victims fully recover from their injuries.

I'm confident the 25 year old asshat will be sitting in jail for a long time.

Well look at the following statements from each of the two stories:

"...A man driving a pickup truck brushed up against one of the cyclists and another rider started yelling at the driver, Wright said. ..." matt.galnor@jacksonville.com, (904) 359-4550

"...The group was returning to the Florida State College at Jacksonville Kent Campus when one brushed against Salmons, who was passing through the group in his pickup truck. ..." By Dana Treen/jacksonville.com

Who brushed who? Or was there a presumption about this on the part of the reporter or writer? Then I clicked on the link for the Dana Treen story (the second one posted to this thread). The story has been changed back to agree with the statement above, excerpted from the matt galnor story. Also, new details about the driver's record have been added.

Driving appears to pose more stress and responsibility than this guy is able to handle. Probably shouldn't be operating a motor vehicle on the road for a few years or more.

For Mr. Faulk to have one stab wound to the abdomen and, five to the back, that shouldn't be a charge of battery!!!! That should be a charge of attempted murder!!!!

If he would have just stayed in his vehicle and run them over, he would have gotten off scot-free. By assaulting them with knife instead of car, he guaranteed himself jail time. What's wrong with *that* picture?

cudak888 being a Fla native- might be right.

I fully expect this guys story will morph into something more like " stopped to check on rider that fell against my truck, I was attacked, I defended myself and fought my way back to my truck and left."

He most assuredly will back away from the "went to town" statement-maybe claiming he was "driving" to town post attack??

Not sure how he(his lawyer) will handle the 5 stab wounds in the back??

Does this guy have a criminal record-violent record?? Why would a FLA native use a knife anyway?? Where was his handgun? Is he on probation/parole?? I'm serious- many folks in the deep south have guns in their vehicles. A knife is so 1950's? It sounds like a prison type attack-5 stab wounds in the back??

The pocket knife-not in his pocket?- makes me wonder if he has a criminal record and can't have a gun, and maybe can't have a knife on his person?

Too bad they aren't commuters, a dozen or so u-locks handy at the disposal of riders, would mean that that particular driver or lunatic, however you want to call him, would not walk away just like that. I am against violence, but if he followed and attacked them, sometimes it is sadly, necessary to act that way in self defense. Sad to read what lunatics are out there.

Chicago Al- he is well and truly screwed for that "retrieved his knife" statement.

There just isn't any way to spin that statement. It means he could have left, but he decided to arm himself and stay.

He will need an extremely adept lawyer. I would say he will need Bryant's lawyer, but he will need a much better lawyer since his victims are probably middle class college kids with no records.

Does this low life have a record? Hard to believe that a thug like this hasn't left a trail of some sort.
