Penn. Ave. lanes open
The nation's capital now has a bike lane Pennsylvania Ave. between the White House and the Capitol, running through the center median.
They kinda suck because you catch every single red light (like the motorists do). But it's an important symbol.

Is use of the special median lanes (and the pedestrian signals and crosswalks to reach them) mandatory in DC, or can cyclists just use the normal travel lanes in the vehicular manner if they prefer?

However, with all of the fuss about the new bike lanes, I kinda feel obliged to use them IF I ride that part of Pennsylvania Ave.
I've ridden those lanes a few times now. As bike lanes go, I don't much like them. Westbound you really do catch every red light. I'd much rather have a "traditional" bike lane on each side of the road, instead of in the center.
I'll probably stick with F Street or the Mall.

I think the regular DC law still applies, bike permitted on roads unless posted otherwise.

What a perfect picture of a useless bike lane designed such that the pedestrians waiting for the crossing signal, are blocking the bike lane, when cyclist have a green light.

I wonder if this will be like the solar panels on the white house.
