Usually if i'm going that slow, i'll just ride on the sidewalk if it's legal. (signs let us know in some parts of town). Nobody walks in L.A. anyway.. they even made a song about it..

Riding a busy single lane during the day is scary by itself let alone at night and I try to avoid them if I can. I feel you have to do what is best for you and the road and the area that you ride in, if you are use to riding on the sidewalk and you feel safe then go for it.
At night riding home at 11:00 pm I wear a reflective vest, reflective bands on my ankles and wrists, have five blinkies, and one Foxfire light https://www.ledsafetylights.com/safet...p?ProductID=85 on the rear and in some areas I use them all. Two lights on the bar and one Flea combo on my helmet. And my panniers are reflective. Overkill I know but at least the should be able to see me at night. I ride the breakdown lane on Roosevelt blvd if there is one but on the four lane, speed limit 40, 45 mph narrow 9th street I still take the right lane.
I take one way to work and another more congested way home (safer, more people) don't want to get mugged if I can help it. It is dangerous out there so just do what you have to to stay safe..Cheers

I used to worry about this occasionally, even though I know it's irrational -- the fact of the matter is, those highway drivers who are pissed off at you for doing 8 mph in front of them aren't going to be any happier if you're doing 15 mph. Or 30 mph. If you need to take the lane for your safety (i.e. if you notice that cars pass you much too closely if you try to be "nice" and stay to the far right), then ride smack down the middle and ignore the honking.
