1) HOWARD ST BIKE LANES STRIPED this WEEK!
We have great news for everyone who bikes through South of Market - the City has begun striping the new Howard Street bike lane extension between Fremont & Fifth Streets, and should be done any day now! This comes after two years of work by SFBC members to extend the bike lanes originally striped on Howard St in 2002, which run from 5th to 11th Streets.
Thanks in part to SFBC members like you, who wrote, called & faxed their elected officials, the Howard St Bike Lane Extension passed the Board of Supervisors unanimously in late August. The Department of Parking & traffic deserves kudos as well for their work on this bike lane project. We're now one step closer to a complete citywide bicycle infrastructure, the SFBC's biggest goal... but our work's not done yet!
The next bike lane up for a vote is the Folsom Street Extension, which would bring bike lanes past Rainbow Grocery to 14th Street. Please take a moment today to thank your Supervisor for voting YES on Howard St, and to encourage them to vote YES on the Folsom Street Bike Lane Extension, too!

2) VOLUNTEER at FOLSOM ST FAIR
Every year, about 300,000 people come to the Folsom St Fair to celebrate a culture is as big on community service as it is on naughty fun. The SFBC is providing coat check & free valet bike parking services on 9th Street at Harrison. We'll also be getting the word out about extending the Folsom St Bike Lanes.
Volunteer at the SFBC booth and put yourself in the center of the action! Costumes and creative attire are highly encouraged, of course - this is a great chance to show off what biking has done for your legs!

3) DOES THE MAYOR RIDE a BIKE?
"I do [ride a bicycle], but I barely get to walk around now. I'm always being driven around, 15 minutes late, everywhere I go. That's the burden of being a mayor, but this is a great bicycling city. We're trying to make bicycling more accessible as a part of our day-to-day lives as San Franciscans as well, with our bike plan and our bike network and re-striping the streets. The backdrop of this event is so spectacular, and I think it's a great asset for a bike race in general."

4) KRYPTONITE RESPONDS TO BIKE LOCK CRISIS
Kryptonite corporation announced on Friday that they will provide product upgrades for bike locks purchased since September 2002 and a "sizeable rebate" to those purchased prior to that. See https://www.sfbike.org/ulocks for the entire statement. Details about the program will be available on Wednesday, September 22nd on their web site, https://www.kryptonite.com All exchanges and upgrades will be handled through existing dealers. We have not heard any information from other companies who manufacture this type of lock, but we'll let you know when we have more information.
SFBC members responded quickly to this crisis, distributing special flyers to cyclists about the security breach, posting information on our web site, and contacting media outlets with the message that u-locks aren't the only things that are broken- we also need to fix police response to bike theft, address the lack of secure bicycle parking, and increase the number of bikestations in the Bay Area.
Also, we recommend taking the time to record your bike's serial number and take photos of your bike -- both of which you should keep it in a safe place, as well as on your person - that way you can provide the information to police immediately after a theft while the bike may still be in the area.

5) FREE TICKETS TO MADCAT FILM FESTIVAL
We're proud to support the MadCat Women's International Film Festival, which exhibits independent and experimental films and videos directed by women from around the globe. Screenings began on September 14th and continues through October 3rd. The SFBC is proud to sponsor "Home Sweet Home" (MadCat Program #5), on Tuesday, September 21st, which is chock full of riveting documentaries that chronicle the lives of communities and individuals as they navigate their search for new homes. This program includes "Jam," an observational documentary about people who are stuck in a seemingly never-ending traffic jam. Enjoy a free BBQ before the screening at the El Rio, starting at 6:30 at 3158 Mission St @ Precita. After the free grub, grab a drink & snuggle with your honey under the stars on the El Rio back terrace, where MadCat is screening their program. Bring a blanket!

6) STAND UP FOR BIKE RIGHTS on BRIDGES!
The latest news for bikes on Bay Area bridges is not good, reports the Bay Area Bicycle Coalition (BABC), which represents local bike coalitions on regional issues. Plans for bike access on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge have stalled, there is no funding allocated yet for a west span bike path on the Bay Bridge, the bike shuttle across the Benicia-Martinez Bridge has been discontinued, and the newly opened Carquinez Bridge is closed to cyclists at night due to "terrorism" concerns.
What's going on here? It's time to demand answers from local leaders. Cyclists pay taxes to build and maintain these bridges- why aren't we getting equal access? Please write to the Bay Conservation & Development Commission and point out that cyclists do more than their fair share to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. Ask for full access on all Bay Area Bridges, including dusk-to-dawn access to the Carquinez Bridge (just like the Golden Gate Bridge), the restoration of the Benicia-Martinez Bridge Bike Shuttle, and a renewed look at a bikes on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.

7) AFTER-SCHOOL BIKE PROGRAMS SEEK YOUR HELP
The SFBC is coordinating with the YMCA and Beacon Center to run three after school programs for middle school students, focusing on getting more kids riding in SF - safety and skills are the main themes. We are excited about this program and need your help!
* Volunteers * : Want to help teach kids how to ride? Help with neighborhood rides? Have an afternoon to spare? The programs run everyday from 3:30-5:30 at 3 different SF schools; any assistance*is helpful (from a single afternoon to weekly volunteering).
* Bike Mechanics * : We've fixed up a lot of donated bikes for the kids, but need a little more help to finish off the job! There's 10 more bikes in need of love, donated from the Police department. We're looking for folks who know how to fix bikes and are available either in the evenings this week or next, or this Sat. all day (repairs will be done at an SFBC member's house in the Mission).

8) TUBE TIMES FOLDING PARTY THIS WEEK!
Yes, it's time for another issue of the SFBC's bimonthly print newsletter to hit mailboxes all over town. Naturally, we'll continue our tradition of providing tasty snacks, and free conversation with fellow do-gooder cyclists at this Wednesday's folding party -- the perfect way to relax via repetative tasks while helping a good cause! Did we mention that volunteers vote for the dinner of their choice? Yes, we serve Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese or pizza, whatever y'all decide you'd like. So come on down & help us mail thousands of "Tube Times" issues! This month we have a couple special inserts, so your help will be especially appreciated. Dave Snyder and Brian Smith will report on their trip to the The 4th annual Toward Car Free Cities conference was held in Berlin this July. The World Car-Free Network hosted this annual gathering for advocates of reduced car use and car-free areas in the world's cities. Dave and Brian will share photos of successful car-free efforts in Berlin, Amsterdam, and elsewhere, and share details about London's $8/day toll to drive into the center city as well as the impressive official efforts to promote European Car-Free Day. SPUR Forums are open to the public, free for members and $3 for non-members.

In this session, Pedal Revolution staffers will make sure your shifting is snappy. They'll cover different types of shifters and gear combinations, troubleshooting, proper adjustments and emergency repairs. The Policy Document is an important piece of the Bike Plan, including plans for broadening bike access to transit, better bike parking, education of motorists and cyclists, and more. SPUR FORUM: CAR-FREE CITIES CONFERENCE REPORT

Dave Snyder and Brian Smith will report on their trip to the The 4th annual Toward Car Free Cities conference was held in Berlin this July. The World Car-Free Network hosted this annual gathering for advocates of reduced car use and car-free areas in the world's cities. Dave and Brian will share photos of successful car-free efforts in Berlin, Amsterdam, and elsewhere, and share details about London's $8/day toll to drive into the center city as well as the impressive official efforts to promote European Car-Free Day. SPUR Forums are open to the public, free for members and $3 for non-members.
