Headlight: minimum 10 watts.
Tail lights: red flashers or big yellow flasher + reflector
Handlebars: Cinelli Lux reflective tape.
Reflective tape on whatever you can stick it on! Ankle strap that reflects (great up and down motion gets attention)
Did use strips of silver relfective tape on flat part of rim between the spokes (about 4 or 5 per wheel) for spinner effect.
Pedals: relectors; or if not possible put on reflective tape on back of pedal

Motto for night riding: Bicyclists should be seen and not hurt!

Cool. How are those bar-end shifters working for you? Is it easy to find gears with them? I was thinking of getting those on my next road bike.

This is the first bike I have put them on. I have had it about three weeks and I am used to them now and like them a lot. Changing gears with them is not a big deal, not as easy as or fast as brifters in the hoods, but I like them and they should be very trouble free. I put them on with hopes of long distance touring, so durability and maintenance were my first concerns. I think they will continue to grow on me.

[QUOTE=AndrewP]The red blinkie lights are quite directional, so be careful how you mount them. I have seen them mounted on backpacks so they are very visible when the wearer is walking, but when leaning forward on a bike they only show themselves to passing birds and aircraft.

I like the pedal reflectors, but my clipless SPD pedals dont have any provision for them, so I put white reflective tape on the front and back of the cranks.[/QUOTE

Do you use the SPD MTB type pedals? If so, go to the local bike shop, and ask them for the reflectors that come with most bikes. I got mine free because most people take them off before leaving the shop, since they don't use SPDs. They essentially clip in to one side of a two sided SPD clipless pedal. Another substitute is to wear reflectors that wrap around your ankles. The ones at bike shops are good, but running stores have wider ones. These will give you the "up and down" motion that catches people's attention.

Most jurisdictions spell out the correct light colors to use. Red is for the rear only amber is for the front.

I noticed there are barend LEDs on the market, anybody have comments on them?

I'm developing bar-end light concepts and need more information.

How are they working?
Which battery?
Easy to maintain?
Durability in crashes?
Manufacturers?
Suggestions for new products in this category?

I personally do not use them, or at least not yet. But I have noticed and heard that they are only really visible when your hoods are parallel to the road, otherwise they shine more towards the ground. It would be cool if the led was adjustable or rotatable so you could point it more upwards if needed.

I have them. I also use a bright rear tail light. I think of the bar ends as providing visiblity for close and passing cars, the taillight for more distant, hence the slight point down is not an issue (i've tested from distance and they are still visible.)
They do shine on ones legs, not a big deal as it is red light, bu makes it obvious that not all the light is getting behind.
Sure there maybe some minor improvements, but as for me they are an extra, not an only safety light I would not pay any more, nor would I expect any more from them - that is keep them small, simple and cheap.

Don't rely on reflectors. Problems are:
-- narrow angle of reflectibility, thus will fail with most vehicles. Substituting auto for bike does not change this.
-- degrade with time, as surface gets coated and plastic changes
-- riders assume they are better than they are.

I have a white blinkie on the front next to my "classic Wonderlite" (converted to use 4xAA rechargeable
batteries), and two blinkies on the back; a red at the end of the rear rack and an amber one on the
back of the left pannier. Both are set to blink quickly, but at different rates to attract more attention.
While I have pedal reflectors front and rear, they don't help as much as they might otherwise due to
being partially obscured by the panniers. Helmet is liberally decorated with stripes of white reflective
tape, and the panniers also have reflective side stripes. Cars give me plenty of room.

I wonder how many here even know what a Wonderlite looks like? I'm showing my age.
