Reminder to all

We can always use a little reminder to remain visible and defensive while riding.

Heather Butcher (a pro triathlete) was hit while biking after a left-turning (US) driver failed to give her the right of way. The other car appearantly did not stop at a stop sign and collided with her front tire. She is facing surgery today to repair a badly broken wrist. Her bike was destroyed.

The driver, what did he get? A TICKET FOR RECKLESS DRIVING! At least she will be able to ride again in the future. It could have been much worse.

My one collision with a motor vehicle (Nov. 1976) was similar -- a motorist turned left into a driveway, crossing my path to do so, whilst I was descending at 25mph. I suffered a concussion, a fractured clavicle, and a facial laceration (permanent "dueling scar") The concussion convinced me to trade my heavily padded leather "hairnet" helmet for a Bell Biker hardshell; the incident itself caused me to start wearing brightly-coloured cycling jerseys, vests, and jackets.
