This great N.Y. Times column presents some of the detailed economic studies which demonstrate why investing in bicycling infrastructure pays big social dividends.

once municipalities begin to mainstream this economic reality, expect a change in the ways roads are designed and rider share too.
I see the tipping happening, its going to be a few more years or a couple of decades, but bicycle traffic is going to become more common as cities realize the economic savings and positive social aspects in normalizing bicycling in america.

Great article. Build it and they will come seems like a pipedream, but when one factors in a cheaper cost to build shower facilities than parking spaces for the same amount of people it's, kind of a no-brainer. As a +20 year cycle-commuter I can just see the upward tick beginning as of late. There're simply more people on bikes during my commutes.
