what a bunch of b.s. to bring up that messenger's death. a commercial bike rider is already required to have certain information available at all times pertaining to the businesss, the business number, etc.. they must always display the name of the company on their upper body. obviously none of that helped this poor guy. using his death as an example proves nothing and is a feeble attemp to shock people into supporting her cause.

Obviously she wants tags on bicycles in an effort to ticket, and eventually outlaw cycling in NYC – this is her poorly hidden agenda. However, she attempts (sadly, and ineffectively) to turn her hate toward cyclists into a “safety” issue. Moreover, she disgustingly uses the death of a messenger to champion her bogus cause. This is especially vial given that a dooring inflicted from an illegally parked delivery truck ultimately caused the messenger’s death.

She is a disgusting woman, championing a ridiculous cause. She’ll probably win.

I think registration plates is a good thing for enforcing the laws, but not the penalties she proposes. Apart from traffic law enforcement, this could aid in tracing stolen bikes. However this should be a state law and not a municipal by-law.

Supposedly, there has been a lot of email in opposition, the Daily News, which you would expect would have her back on this, calls her a knucklehead, and even her colleagues have been making a mockery of this. Instead of letting it fade, she drags a dead man into it. Perhaps it's time for a second round of emails, letting her know that this new tactic isn't cricket.

But if they do decide to issue a ticket they will know where to send it because of the truck registration. I f the police get numerous complaints, that a bike with your registration number has been seen riding on the sidewalk, they could issue you with a ticket.

According to this article, the good councilwoman is using her position as chair of a committee to hold up a bill that would let cyclists take their bikes into buildings. She says maybe she'll take up the bikes-in-building bill at the same time she takes up the bike registration bill.

Just where are we going to display this highly visible license plate on our bikes? I have a seat bag hanging under my seat, so it wouldn't hang visibly from my seat rails. Do we modify the law to require fenders and cargo racks on all bikes? Where will the front plate be mounted? Will we be required to have a small light shining on it at night so it can be seen, like an automobile?

I for one have a seat bag and on the end of that seat bag is my blinky. You can bet as sure as I'm sitting here if the license plate obscured any part of my blinky I would get some kind of ticket for that.

Well, according to the bill, you will be required to display two 6"x10" steel license plates, one front and one rear. Special frameworks, or "bumpers" will be required to hold them. After dusk and before dawn, they must be illuminated by electric lights, which will be provided power by a combination battery/generator system. To help cyclists with the additional weight these systems will impose, they will be required to install a small motor of at least 8hp, although the bill recommends a much larger motor than that. The pedals,cranks and bottom bracket should be removed to allow for safe installation of the required motor. In addition, given the added weight's propensity for throwing the bicycle off balance, two additional wheels may be installed to assist the cyclist in maintaining balance. Though the "one in the front, three in the back" training wheels method may seem familiar and appropriate to cyclists, the bill requires a "two in the front, two in the back" system, which will greatly enhance stability. In addition, some system of safety restraint will become mandatory. Bicyclists may also wish to install some permanent or semi-permanent structures to protect themselves and their bicycles from inclement weather.
