Cyclist Battling the Odds

This is a sad story, but there does seem to be hope. Sending this young rider the good energy...

It was no surprise eight days ago that Collin was riding at the front as the group stormed toward the county limits. Determined to win the sprint against the older cyclists, Collin darted to his left to pass a rider just as a motorist was trying to pass the group. The driver clipped Collin's rear wheel and the impact flung him to the ground face-first at 35 mph.

The California Highway Patrol's preliminary investigation showed the driver was not at fault and will not be charged, spokesman Max Hartley said.

Looks to me that the driver was passing too close to the group. He should have passed in the other lane, or not at all. The group was going 35 mph.

He should be charged with unsafe passing.
