You make a good point, most injuries are not serious and not head injuries to boot. if I fall off my bike I won't go to the doc's, they won't report it and I"ll tend to my boo-boos. statistics are useless unless 100% of us report every single incident.
how can we be sure every doctor's visit gets reported anyway? I don't have insurance, if I go to the doc's, why would my visit be recorded for statistical purposes? and your assumption that every crash comes with a mandatory head impact doesn't make sense. statistics only prove math can be corrupted
gloves are the number one safety device I own, because every crash I've had they've been used.

I never assumed that all crashes involved a head injury, you assumed that that is what I was assuming.

I look at it like this, most of us on here aren't professionals, we haven't had training. We are out doing it for enjoyment and exercise. So when something occures, it's fast and reaction time is minimal. You do the best you can like I did yesterday with that dog.

I just can't understand why people would balk at a safety item. We all know seat belts and condoms aren't 100%, but we all hope our children use them.

Sorry, but this would have the opposite effect on the statistics. If helmets were preventing injuries that would otherwise have been reported, then their use would, by definition, cause a reduction in the number of injuries reported. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

The conclusion I draw is that when unhelmeted riders have accidents, they too are usually minor and go unreported. And if the accident is more serious - typically involving a collision with a vehicle - then as we know, the amount of protection a helmet can give is too limited to make a significant difference.

nope a child is not an adult, even if it's your offspring. ok 'your' offspring is 'your' child, but certainly not my children.

Tornadoes killed more than 500 people in the U.S. last year — the highest number in decades. Already this year, 63 people have died, and the tornado season doesn't hit its peak until June.

But tornadoes don't have to be as deadly. Experts say some deaths could be prevented if people would do one more thing when taking cover: wear a helmet. It's a message safety advocates are preaching, but that message hasn't resonated with federal officials just yet.

At a recent Birmingham Barons baseball game, safety advocates handed out 125 bicycle helmets as part of a giveaway for tornado preparedness.
The Fulton family of Trussville, Ala., was standing in line with their three kids.
"We didn't even think anything about it last year, and then we started hearing how much safer things were once it happened and that you should wear them," says Alan Fulton. "And it's like ... 'Why didn't we do it?' I don't know."
His wife, Melissa, says wearing helmets during severe weather is "a great idea; it just never occurred to us."

Do doctors study helmets in medical school? Sometimes I wonder if they are making the same uniformed assumptions as any other lay person. "Helmet cracked!? Probably saved your life."

My father in-law is a family practice doctor and said he knows nothing about bicycle helmets. Though he has heard that they can mitigate some head injury.

Does anyone have any information on how doctors make these judgements?

Same as most of us - i.e. without much data.

Our daughter finished medical school a few years ago and the only mention of bike helmets was by her 1st year psych professor who was a strong proponent of them. She sent him a copy of a Brit. Med. Journal article on the ineffectiveness of bike helmets. She later heard that he was telling one of his other classes about how uppity the first-year students were becoming - even questioning bike helmets.

JAMA and the New England Journal have both printed heavily pro-helmet articles depending on the discredited Thompson-Rivara stats (the "85 percent safer!!!" nonsense.)
