The size of a house doesn't really affect energy use. It does to some degree, but things like insulation and appliances make a bigger difference. These are harder to see. I wouldn't ever buy a house like this. I see green design becoming more popular in the States, so I'd like to think that these behemoth energy-inefficient homes are on the road out.
There are also millions of different home designs. You can't just walk up to a big home and see Ford, Chevy, Geo (just kidding )
Homes are a lot harder to directly see a problem with energy use. SUVs, you see a big one, you know that it's a gas hog. They're getting worse, too. People just accept it as a fact of life, but it's not. Look at what's going on up in Alaska right now. They are having massive climate changes. Right now cities are flooding, permafrost is melting and undermining structures, and forests are burning. People like these Alaskans being forced from their homes are paying the price for a luxury that most people don't need. They're paying for something that someone else is using.
So if this minor irritation is all that comes with the ownership of one of these, I think that that's a pretty small price to pay. If I was irresponsible enough to own one of these, I would be pretty happy if the crazy activists stopped with a bumper sticker and didn't key it or vandalize it (which I view as unacceptable and completely inappropriate.)
