In line with the new Clean Air Corridor policy at Portland State University, the covered smoking area was converted into an emission free zone. PDX.edu's 2000+ bike parking spaces have been increased by 10.

Your's truly was the first to use it...

But not the last...

Now that's how covered smoking areas should be properly used!

Kudos to the Governor for his new no smoking on state property policy.

Here in Eugene, the only covered bike parking downtown was once the racks in front of the library. It was a convenient location, but it was mostly used by smokers to hang out. After hundreds of complaints by citizens who wanted to use the racks and not be poisoned, the city finally made the entire sidewalk area in front of the library a no smoking zone two years ago.

Now if we could just make it a no bike thief zone...

I was thinking the presence of those smokers around the covered racks would deter thieves from hacking away at locks and cables under their watchful eyes. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Here in Québec to motivate people to stop smoking (?!?) we have a law that forbid anyone to smoke in a 10 meter range of the entrance of any public building and there's no such thing as 'covered smoking area'. Which I, as a ex-smoker, think is the right thing to do.

Alas, through the hazy clouds of exhaust the smokers were the ones hacking away at the locks to line their pockets with silver from the purloined steel steeds.

At least if they tried to make off with the bike there'd be little difficulty in catching them.
