Rolling stop at redlight, BIG mistake

On my way back in on my ride today, a woman did a rolling stop at a right turn on red intersection. I was cruising at a pretty good clip and had just entered the intersection on green. She obviously couldn't be bothered to come to a full stop for me.

Too bad for her. At the next street, a mere 100 feet away was one of Ohio's finest, a Ohio State Trooper. He made eye contact with me, pulled out and lit her up and nabbed the driver. The woman's expression as I rode by was priceless!

Good thing she got caught. I've seen motorists be such ***holes to bikers just because they can't wait that extra 20 seconds to stop and let bikers go ahead of them. Intersections on college campus are the worst for me, but that's because I'm a college student and other students ignore me standing at the cross walk to cross unless I take the initiative and jump out onto the road.

Although I'm not a serious bike commuter, and do drive at least 2x more than I ride, I'm very generous to bikers and often let them go ahead because I figure that I've been in that position and someone's gotta be a nice person.

Since it was getting dark, I only did a short ride today because my headlight was low on its' charge. But just in that short time, I encountered three(yes, I counted) drivers that had passed me within inches. Just because they didn't want to wait to get to the RED light. By the time I got to the RED light in question, it went GREEN. I was laughing because of how much gas they wasted, just idling at the RED light. I wasn't going slow, they just had an insatiable urge to sit at a RED light for eons.

Don't you know the rules? They MUST pass. They can not help themselves. The results of their actions are beside the point.

I have far more problems with 'right on red' turners as a pedestrian than I do as a cyclist.

I think a lot of the route decisions I make keep me away from right turn on red scofflaws when I am on my bike. I have more problem with them in my car. Right turn on red was adopted in Pennsylvania very early, it's like a religion now. The "after stop" part is only followed by heretics. Since it's snowing right now, I'm reminded that snow and right on red always makes for some exciting times.

I don't understand. Headlight, singular? Is that a typo?

if i ever find myself in a situation where someone is pulled over for violating my right-of-way (here in NZ it's actually my "priority" - no such thing as "right-of-way"), i'd pull over and make sure the cop has my contact details. i'd be more than happy to "give evidence" (NZ-speak for "testify at trial") if needed.

i'd also want to get the cop's ID, so i can write a nice letter to his/her supervisor

At least they stop (or slow) at the red light.

That might just get him in trouble with the other cops... being nice to a cyclist? Come on!

I can't recall the last time I have actually seen anyone stop when turning right on red unless they absolutely had to - for instance a cement mixer bearing down on them. Although I take advantage of this law, I am an advocate for its repeal. CB HI is right, it puts crossing pedestrians in quite a bit of risk.

Red light cameras around here have changed the habit of motorists to not stop before turning right on red. I know quite a few people that have received tickets in the mail for not coming to a stop. The problem this has created is that motorists are afraid to turn right on red at all, regardless if they have come to a stop, the way is clear, and they can legally proceed. They just sit there waiting for the light to change to green as if it was a no-right-on-red intersection.

That's not a problem; it's a benefit.

Works for me. Wish we could get some red light cameras.

There was a woman killed just 20 or so yards in front of me a few months ago (I didn't see the impact, or much of anything beyond the commotion and emergency vehicles coming and going; there was construction and I was stuck in the same lane as the cars) by a driver turning right on red. She had a pedestrian walk signal.

I was almost plastered as a pedestrian by a right-on-red motorist. I was crossing to his right and he was looking left. I remember thinking in my panic, "It's a Saturn, I wonder if plastic will hurt as much as steel". He missed me because I jumped back, but I really thought I was in for it.

right-on-red doesn't mix well with pedestrian crossings.

You are in the right, but please ride more cautiously for your own sake. Only enter an intersection knowing you have checked for possible dickheads in every direction.

No sheet.

They don't even bother to look to the right on their approach... just eying the left to see if they can cruise on through.

Yeah, there's a section of my ride home where the designated bike path is the sidewalk. Nice and wide, plenty of room, but right hooks are a constant danger. I'm sure the drivers would ***** about me riding on the sidewalk if I got in their way, and at the same time, ***** about me riding in the lane if I got in their way (and it would be much worse if I were on the road, since it's a steep up hill, and only 2 lanes each way with lots of traffic). I'm considering adding a paintball gun to the front tube of my recumbent, and have it set up so when I hit the horn, it also fires a paintball at the (usually) truck.

"BIG" mistake? You do not even know if she was ticketed or just warned. Hardly warrants all caps shouting.

Read A&S much?

EVERYTHING warrants all caps shouting, and whining and/or ranting.

Ohio State Patrol issue a warning!? Possible but not very likely. The OSP also had a Red Light Citation push running last week.
