A topic not often discussed: Infrastructure.

It appears a cyclist was killed by a pothole. The police are still investigating. Yes, he was wearing his helmet and this is why I don't trust carbon.

Requiescat in pace, Brown

Two hours before the fatal crash, Brown tweeted "Nice day at Mablethorpe today only thing is we're gonna bike there hope I get to have an ice cream and some candyfloss."

We don't know how big this pothole was since no picture was taken. I'll tell you that it takes very little to throw you off the bike and I've seen some very serious injuries happen because of minor road abrasions. Heck, the whole city of New York is one big pothole and it's never going to get better. If you want to feel safe, ride a mountain bike with dual supension.

The closest I have come to serious injury was a recent road patch. Several holes abotu 8x20 feet each had been dug up in Sepulveda pass. About the 3rd one down was resurfaced poorly and I hit the 1 inch lip at an angle and barely kept up. I had almost regained control as I hit the next one.

I was lucky, that one was flush.

About an hour later the LA Wheelman came through. A lady in their group wnet down and suffered a broken collarbone and ruptured spleen.

This is the kind of thing I've been harping on the local agencies to make things safe for years (with mostly favorable results)... That said, a friend of mine was on a group ride when she hit a pothole, she went down, with a broken wrist (requiring pins), facial cuts, and a nasty concussion (she was wearing a helmet, but hit face first). She's since given up riding bikes. :(

You can see what can be done by checking out my thread "Advocacy Thread... What Have YOU Done Today??".

If you see something, you CAN do something about it.
