There's only 4 little blue dots in 20 states combined (VA-WV-NC-SC-GA-TN-AL-MS-AR-OK-WY-ND-SD-NV-VT-NH-ME-MI-DE-MD).

Also there's only a dozen places in the lower 48 that are most-bike-friendly, out of 7,000 locations surveyed.

Someone should tell the author the world is not black and white, rather many greys. I guess this is the kind of info you get on a low budget and a single "GIS Applications Specialist" as source.

Exactly.

Sometimes journalists try to act like scientists by doing studies like this that rely on sets of objective data. Just because that data is objective, i.e. applied equally to all places in all situations, doesnít mean itís relevant. Iím not about to move to Davis just because of a few hills.

Looks like to them bike able means flat!

Hill Score

Seattle Bike Infrastructure
Raw USGS Elevation Data Used For Hill Score

To calculate the "hilliness" of an area we look at the steepest grade within a 200 meter radius of the origin. A grade of 10% - 2% is given a score of 0 - 100. Our data source is the National Elevation Data set from the USGS.
Sorry even getting older and fatter (and I never was a mountain goat on a bike) I find that stupid. If I can't get anywhere without stupidly steep hills is a negative. BUT no hills, no fun canyons and rides to overlooks where one can look out and say they accomplished something is a bigger negative.

Oh and wide open and flat everywhere translates to killer winds. I'm big and fat enough I do pretty well, but time in a sandblaster is no fun, even for me. (Tis good for the ego to have a long line sucking me wheel however).
