Giro's new bike clothing: Blends in with the background
 

Giro has come out with a line of cycling clothing that is made to look like regular street wear as opposed to cycling-specific Lycra wear.

This is a good thing, I'm sure there are a lot of potential cyclists out there who are put-off by Lycra. The more cyclists, the more-better the country.

To my opinion the clothing line is just a bit too much like civies in that the colors are mostly earth-tone colors that tend to blend in with the background.

For me one important part of cycling safety is to be very visible, which is what the colorful jersies help to accomplish.

On the other hand, this clothing is aimed at the adult market, and presumably customers of this line are aware of any increased risk.

If I were to buy one of these it would be the one with the red band around. But I won't buy this line, as the Lycra is very functional for my style of riding.

Too expensive, and where are the women's clothes?

Must be an incredible markup on those items. The prices are ridiculous. I paid $20 2 years ago for a pair of lycra liner shorts pretty much identical to the Giro ones shown at $100.

Nothing wrong with wearing clothing that doesn't look "bikey". Visibility while riding is as easy as adding a vest or similar item.

I kind of love the thought behind all of these new fancy "commuter" clothes - "Hey, let's show people they don't have to wear fancy clothes to cycle in by selling them fancy clothes to cycle in!"

The kind of people that they're targeting wouldn't buy them if they weren't expensive.

A friend at work was showing me some nice dresses from a catalog that was clearly shooting for the hip wannabe environmentalist with money crowd. They were selling simple dresses for $300+. I did a little investigation and found out that they make their clothing in the same Asian sweatshops that the cheap discount retailers do, but they sell to the people who wouldn't be seen dead in a Wal*Mart, even though they're wearing basically the same stuff.

A good read: Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion by Elizabeth Cline. I don't have much of any interest in clothes or fashion (I shop for most of my clothes at yard sales/thrift stores) but this was a good book.

I have been looking a some cycling shorts at Aerotech Design. I think I'm going to order a pair to try. They have some good basic shorts at decent prices. Made in USA too.

Over $100 for a t-shirt seems a bit silly to me :/

WOW And I waited for the REI anniversary sale to buy a $65 pair of shorts and a $50 jersey at 25% off. I would NEVER spend that much money on clothing. I nearly cried at REI, but it was worth it after a few rides without bike shorts and sweating my tail off. GIRO has lost it's mind.

I took me a while to spend what they're asking for some of their clothes, and by then I had a lot more to show for it.

I did spend about $90 on a custom made jacket that's been worth every penny. I got it from Lou at Foxwear, he makes his products in the US and didn't charge anything extra for the custom sizing or the extra retroreflective stripes on it.
