Car jumps sidewalk - hits kids walking to school in NYC

Ride your bike on NYC sidewalk - you are charged with a misdemeanor. Run over some kids with your car - you are free to go.

The NYPD is confident that increasing the crackdown on bikes will make us all safer.

The NYPD needs a crackdown, to stop their bias against cyclists'.

“He hit the gas instead of the brake,” said Crowley
Suuuure it was a mistake.

I've done that before and never had the car move more than a foot before realizing that's not the right pedal.

Drivers are inside their cars and you can't see what they were doing, so they can always make up things like wanting to hit the brake but hit gas instead, and deny that they were texting or picking up a hat from the floor. They have plenty of excuses to make and can always blame the car. Cyclists are in plain view and when they hit someone, they apparently "manually" did so with their own hands; nothing else to blame.

NYPD's autocentric values are glaringly apparent in this incident, the cyclist that knocked down Nicole Kidman is being charged with reckless driving, riding on a sidewalk, and riding without a helmet, yet this motorist's incident was a "mere accident" with no charges pending, what a bunch of bull****. Kidman walks away, is able to attend a party later that day, and the one child hit by the motorist is looking at several months of physical recovery.

I don't see any cycling content in the article so I don't see how it pertains to advocacy and safety in a cycling forum.
