Several years ago, I was approaching a left I had to make, less than 30 yards from it, so I was near the centerline, ready to turn; a car sped past me very closely, then cut off my turn by making the left literally 2 feet in front of me.

As a result of that, I stopped 'centerlining', and chose the left-tire-track for my left-turn positioning at that turn. Last year, a CO-WORKER (who rides bikes with her husband) sped around me to cut off my left turn! (She didn't meet my eye at work for six months, but never apologized; she knew I saw her, knew I was outraged by it, because she locked eyes with me right after the fact.)

BUT, I will say, that was the last time anyone passed me there. I've gotten a bit more aggressive about claiming my space.

The really crappy thing is, it's the turn-in to the parking lot at my job.

(A recent LOL moment, though: lst week, I was in line to make that turn, rolling probably 12mph or so, with traffic; the car in front of me started to turn, and I already had enough momentum that I could COAST UP that small incline, and ended up at the top of it RIGHT ALONGSIDE THAT DRIVER! He about shat!)

Autonomous cars, think of what is shown in iRobot with Will Smith. Mostly autonomous, can go up and down the sides of buildings and stuff. Then cars more like regular cars that are autonomous but can be overridden by the human driver.

I think the override option is important. Think of the chaos were there to be some kind of disruption to the system, hacking, that sort of thing.

Yep, it's no treat.

I've started positioning far left when doing a left. That has eliminated the swoopers but encourages impatient left hookers. Though a pain, the hookers are predictable and I'm slowing down anyway.

Mine happened to me about 2/10ths of a mile from home. My last turn right before home. I look back as I approach the intersection, see a green Honda way back (25mph residential street) so I move to the middle of the lane to make my left turn home. Just as I signal my turn and start leaning to the left, the Honda FLIES past me on the left. The road in front of him (and me) is a blind turn. He had to be doing at least 50 and there is a stop sign less than a 1/10th of a mile around the blind turn. He had a young boy in the front seat with him. He risked his life, the boy's life and my life to shave about 5 seconds off of his route to the stop sign.

While I have been passed with drivers hugging me and honking at me (the BLANKING NERVE); but THANKFULLY, I cannot remember ever being passed on the left, let alone while I am turning left. Though I have had it happen while I was driving the speed limit, and that driver hit a bunch of trees while trying to do so- hopefully, the people in the automobile came away with no injuries and learned a lesson/justice.

Yes, to the OP's question... the most notable was an ambulance in non-emergency mode that charged past us over the double line as we were moving into the left lane of an intersection. At least they gave us plenty of space. Generally I try to wave to people to pass me on the right as I move to the left lane.

I had something very close to what The OPer asked about, just this morning while bicycling into a intersection a car driver sped-up and turned right, right in front of me, as I was entering the intersection to go stright through the intersection- mere feet away. Luckily, for all involved, I am still having catching problems with my back gears and dererailer, all the time when starting to pedal again or bicycling slowly, so I was not moving very fast, not even average for me.

Standard Right hook... very common.

The deal with the left turn "hook" is that it is well signaled, the cyclist is in a "strange place," and the motorist has to go way out of the way to pass on the left.

I agree; but I rarely experience either. I must say though that it happened on the bicycle route that I have ridden maybe, third most. On the bicycle route I ride the most (nearly every weekday) it never ever happens, they know me (and that I will call The Police and argue with them/stand up for myself; especially, after the time I had to call the cops and the cops parked at every other intersection to stop them from playing chicken with me and throwing batteries at my helmeted head) and I know them.

Happened to me on Sunday. I was riding downhill on a 2-lane road, getting ready to make a left, and noticed a car a few hudnred feet behind me. I put my left arm straight out about 100 YARDS before the turn. Just as I got to the side road, I put down my left arm to the handlebar to start the turn, started turning and looked behind me, to notice the car zooming across the double-yellow line and past me on the left. I had to lock up the rear brake to avoid being ran over.

Keep in mind this was on a low-traffic rural road. Five seconds and they could have stayed in the right line and kept going. That is why I ALWAYS look behind me before crossing the centerline, and ALWAYS signal. As far as that motorist is concerned, the only thing I can figure is that they are just plain ignorant. It shows the sad state of driver education and knowledge in this country.

Once, just recently I was heading north on 1st St. N. here in St. Pete. I'd signaled that I was slowing/stopping, then I signaled that I was making a right turn. A "roadie" blows through the stop sign, passing me on the right as I'm about to turn and he calls me a jackass.

Had he done the right/legal thing(s) we wouldn't have had to exchange words.
