Condolences to the families. Second I see no reason what so ever that the driver shouldnt be setting in jail. He is a killer just like any other killer that uses a gun or a knife. He used a car!!!!!

Hopefully NH laws are strong enough to charge her with something more than distracted driving. She needs to be off the road.

I made that assumption a few years ago after one too many close calls that should not have been a close call. I stick to low speed residential roads and bike paths these days.... a sad state of affairs for someone that bike commuted since the late '70s. Drivers are too many, too fast, and too distracted in my area for me to trust... and my reaction times are not getting any better.

In one comment section (I think it was in one of the articles at the Hampton Patch website), someone claiming to be the mother of an eyewitness said that the driver appeared to pull out suddenly from a line of stopped cars and accelerate, like she was attempting to pass. This is incredibly illegal and stupid on that part of the roadway. If this is the case, she is f***ked, and can't use the usual "I didn't see them, the sun was in my eyes, herp derp" excuses.

it is totally routine not to charge someone until a complete investigation is done. Among other things once a person is charged, the timer on things like a rapid trial start. Taking time up front to get all the details and charge at the max to start with, rather than charging low and trying to amend later results in more convictions as I understand it.
Not charging does not = not going to be charged. It is not charged yet.
Not charging does not = not going to be charged. It is not charged yet.

I worked the Kittery ME Ft. McClary rest stop as a volunteer mechanic on Sunday. Turnout was very, very low. Participants can ride either Saturday or Sunday (or both), and rain was forecast for Sunday, so quite a few of the riders started Sat. And then the accident on top of the rain prediction and right out downpour conditions right before the start on Sunday. 1200 riders started Sat AM; 40 riders started Sun AM...

It's hard to believe this could happen on such a short bridge with wide shoulders and a center passing lane:

I presume they took Ms. Hess to Portsmouth Regional to look for signs of brain activity...
Sad, very sad for those families and friends of the deceased.
Note to self, I need to stop reading these posts, they only serve to infuriate me and feed the anxiety. Life is life, make of it what you will as it's given to you and then taken away. Sometimes you are the guiding hand in that finality, sometimes not. Strive to not be that guiding hand.

I can't even think straight at the moment at the "wtf-ness" of the series of these events. My thoughts and prayers to family and friends of the injured and deceased.

What a travesty. And if you read the newspaper article, don't read the comments. There's no one (yet) saying the cyclists are at fault but NH has some bizarre political leanings apparently; there are multiple comments that the driver 'must be an illegal' and someone attempts to blame Obamacare.

One of the articles stated that if she had been driving with a suspended license, she'd have been arrested, but no license is apparently just an infraction. She was pulled over for doing 59 in a 30... which leads me to believe she was actually going faster and the cop did her a "favor" by knocking it down a few mph to get it under reckless speeding (+30mph), with mandatory arrest. (<-- pure conjecture not based on facts) That cop's gonna have some 'splainin' to do...
This is the next town south of the one where the Chief stood in the middle of the road, trying to get a group ride to stop. Riders cycling more than two abreast is a continuing issue.
That some chuckleheads want to use this issue as some kind of illustration regarding any kind of cyclist/motorist beef is just sick.

I was on the ride and arrived at the bridge just as the emergency vehicles were responding. The police had already closed the bridge by then, so I didn't see anything. I don't have much information to add, other than to contradict what a previous poster said about the bridge. It is not a wide bridge with shoulders and a center lane. It is extremely narrow, with no shoulders, and a grid deck in the center of the span (it is a drawbridge). Google Street View will give you a good idea what it's like. There is a narrow sidewalk on one side, which I often walk my bike across in the summer, because it is absolutely terrifying to cross this bridge with angry tourists packing the lanes in both directions. But the sidewalk is on the northbound side, so if you're heading south, good luck crossing the road to get to/from the walkway. That's probably more dangerous than riding across.
It is extremely sad that this happened on the 40th year of this very popular ride. What's especially puzzling is that there is a heavy police presence on the north side of the bridge, because the start of the ride is right there. There is a cop stationed there at all times, stopping traffic to let riders leave the parking lot and make the left onto the bridge. Since the reports say she crossed into the northbound lane, she would have been heading south, meaning she must have driven right by the police officer. At that time of the morning there would have been many bikes on the road. There's no way she could have been surprised by cyclists on the bridge.

We desperately need real traffic law enforcement with real consequences. Yes, even for cyclists. I've lived with zero-tolerance traffic law enforcement and I've lived with zero traffic law enforcement. The former is much better when one is in the saddle and gets more people to get into the saddle.

I had a conversation with a local highway patrol officer some years back, he boiled it down, giving warnings had little effect on driver behavior, when the warnings turned into citations and fines, there was a dramatic change in driver behavior.

I'm not sure what a "selectman" is in NH, but it is some sort of mayoral/govt. position. Acording to the website of the town where this accident occurred, the board of selectmen is the "executive and administrative arm of town government". The vice-chairman in the town has the same last name as the driver. Imagine that? That may explain why certain things may have played out that way. Quite frankly, I don't think family connections will save you when you kill two people and seriously injure two more while driving without a liscence. Just my opinion.

I don't know that there is any connection at all, but if the driver is a daughter of the Selectman and the cop let her off easy with the speeding stop beforehand with that knowledge... things could go downhill fast for all involved.
