From Google Street View: 3 traffic lanes in both directions, with a speed limit of 35 mph. I have no idea what "normal" traffic is on that road, but it seems to me that there is plenty of room and, at the speed limit, plenty of time to react to slower road users. Also, lines of view are good so I can't imagine why someone "didn't see" a cyclist. The news blurb was sparse but it sounds like it was dark when the collision occurred. Nevertheless, the road looks well lit.

This was my response "That is subjective. He may not have had a reflector on his bicycle. But only accident investigation can determine whether he actually did or not. Also, How the hell could the driver call the police, if he had injuries that he ultimately succumbed to?".

Right, in my disgust about the story, I got that detail backwards.

I live near the accident. It was dark at that time and that stretch is not well lit. Speed limit is 35 and the usual speed is 40 to 45. Traffic is usually moderate and a lot of people drive in the right lane. There is not much place for a cyclist except in the right lane. Only the investigation will determine fault but it makes a great case for being well lit on the street.

That section is also pretty dense commercial zoning, so there's a definite possibility the cyclist was either sidewalk jumping or had just pulled out from one of the parking lots in the area.

The commenter says it was near ALA, which makes sidewalk jumping more likely, since IIRC, the sidewalk on the north (westbound) side ends near there.

Sounds to me like a "night ninja" got himself nailed. Not saying I trust the news story or the account of the passenger in the comments section and would like to see the results of an official investigation (and I never trust those completely either).

Just at first glance that is what it sounds like to me ~ One Night Ninja Down.

Very sad but the very reason I have multiple lights front and rear. After dark I do my best to make myself the proverbial Christmas tree and even then I still don't trust the other drivers to always see me and maintain situational awareness.
