NYC City Council trying to reduce speed limits

I just received this link on Facebook. I was dumbfounded when I saw it. Considering how hostile the NYPD is towards the CM crowd.

Very interesting. It could be useful…or not? Probably won't make too much of a difference as no one tends to obey the law anyway + policing is pretty limited unless cops set up particular traps. What is a CM?

I cannot find any connection between the contents of article and the "hostility of the NYPD towards the CM crowd". Please explain why you are dumbfounded.

It's a rule on A&S, or hadn't you noticed? Mandatory mention of cyclists as victims (of police, of 'cagers,' of government, of a ham sandwich, whatever), it has to be in every post. Get with the program.

I'm surprised you didn't know about this. Considering the hostility of XXXX to cyclists.

You are correct. I must be thinking too much of Thanksgiving Day turkey. Thanks for reminding me of the A&S rule that cyclists are always victims of evildoers.

Because, I don't think the City Council is being genuine. Since NYC has horrible traffic congestion. So what good will lowering the speed limit actually do. The connection to CM n' the NYPD is that, just as the NYPD is hostile to cyclists' regardless of CM. I don't believe the NYC City Council will take cyclists' into account as they debate the speed limit.

Dammit, I missed the chance to make it 4 in a row!!

However, I don't see this idea as either pro or anti-cyclist. It's about cars and residents of places like Queens and the Bronx which have long term issues with fast drivers on residential side streets.

There's also a bit of an anti car element in the city council, so this isn't unexpected. I dont' live or drive in NYC except on highways when headed to the airport, so have no dog in the fight, but IMO 20mph is an unreasonably low speed limit, which won't be obeyed or enforced 99% of the time.

With NYPD, it is likely more cyclists will be ticketed than motorist. I could see 25 or 30 mph, but I suspect the average speed on the streets being considered really is 20 mph or less.

Outsiders have a highly distorted vision of NYC, because what's exported is mainly images of Manhattan and, maybe, some parts of downtown Brooklyn. However, those represent only 2 of the five boroughs, and life in the outer three is very different. Except for some rush hour snarls, mainly along highways leading downtown, The outer boroughs have traffic patterns more like a dense suburb than that of lower Manhattan.

Traffic flows well on outer borough streets, and it's not rare at all to have cars cruising side streets at well above 40mph. Major avenues, like the Grand Concourse, Queens Blvd, Hillside Avenue, and many others are like the large multi-lane arterials you see surround mid sized cities, with heavy but moving traffic.

I don't know the details of the city council's plan, but if they're thinking of a broad based lowering of limits, it just isn't going to work.

As for the police using the law to target bicyclists, that just won't happen. If the limit is 20mph, the enforcement limit will be 25, which is well above the cruising speed of the vast majority of bicyclists, including messengers. The reality is that despite the reporting on bike forums, it's actually fairly hard to get a ticket riding a bicycle in NYC. It's a busy city and the police have enough to do, and can't be bothered. There are periodic crackdowns, but those are more about PR then code enforcement.

for my part, I'm not sure whether I've been complimented or insulted by exclusion.
