I don't think LA County Sheriffs is the worst department in the country but they certainly rank up there. They are corrupt from top to bottom. I sometimes think the Mexican federales could teach the LACSO a thing or two about honesty and transparency.

What CB is saying is that LACSD is not able to investigate themselves.

An honest view by LASD vs. the PR department statement by LASD.

As to the "electronics distracted cop" angle (which at this time is the only thing I wish to comment on in this thread).

A potential at least partial solution to that problem would be HUD built into cop cars so that the cop can look at necessary information for his/her job while still keeping eyes on the road. Works for fighter jet pilots, could work for cops as well. Both are under a high expectation to successfully pilot their vehicles while also absorbing highly necessary information in order to do their jobs.

it seems the police vehicle didn't have a dash-cam... well, in a few years, dash-cams will likely be standard equipment on ALL new motor vehicles. then things will get really interesting, when video from a police car is relevant to an investigation, and the cop screwed up significantly.

some departments are toxic and rotten, from top to bottom. any "good cop" will either walk out, or get pushed out. it smells like LACSO may be one of the bad ones.

within good depts, bad cops don't last long. within bad depts, good cops don't last long.

That would not work. It isn't a question of "is this image hitting my retina"
It is "am I perceiving this image-is it reaching my consciousness"
and fighter pilots aren't going to run into anything-whole open sky-
they just want to be able to quickly switch from concentrating on one thing-and save the time to takes to move their eyes 45 degrees as opposed to 1-2 degrees.
And Pilots much better trained- better motivated-and more alert(short missions not 8-12 hr boring shifts)

Yeah-HUD- just saves 1/10-1/100 seconds- important when closing speeds 1200 mph- or even 2000 mph.

I don't see anyway for this to happen if the cop was looking at the road- broad daylight-good weather- sun overhead-not in his face
Unless the rider suddenly changed his line. Older person-some chance he had some medical problem-climbing- perhaps MI STROKE
Distracted driving more likely than medical emergency-but possible.
No dash cams-sure sign someone at the top didn't want them.
You bike riding cheapskates have cams-surely a police department could afford them.
Perhaps this episode will force them to get video.
If his family takes this as a challenge(assuming they actual like him-miss him) they might have to pull to make a big deal out of it.
Not sure just how "LOVED" an entertainment lawyer would be.Probably has as many enemies as friends. Might be on trophy wife #3 .
Yes I'm being a jerk, but this guy-probably not Nelson Mandela- wife grown kids -might dislike him and be happy to divy up his assets.
They don't seem to be making much noise?? Corrupt cops kill hubby daddy-I would be pissed.

Our NOPD cops have dash cams now(I think) it would be hard to find a more corrupt 1st world or second world police dept-they are thugs and thieves.
Their first and second impulse is to cover up-just like the bridge shootings(which were revenge shooting killings because they thought cops had been shot at)
and the shooting burning of Henry Glover(cop found innocent-second trial yesterday-but he did several years-probably about right for a "stupid trigger cop shooting"-under the circumstances-Katrina scared

Looking at one of the photos, the investigation markers trail back towards the bike lane, with the windshield of the patrol vehicle smashed in the center or just left of center, giving me a personal indication that the cyclist was riding in bike lane, and the LEO didn't correct for the dogleg in the roadway.

Well.... we all have our own idea of fantasy. I prefer much more mature women. And... being married... I am certain my wife would kill me if I died while with another woman. I think my after-life would be more peaceful if I died while cycling.

But we all die. As the saying goes... no one gets out of here alive. I see the tragedy when a child rolls out in traffic and gets run over. And of course the lost of life or limb is always sad.

Hope you don't mind my editing humor.

Dyno-thanks.Seem reasonable. Cops have plenty of electronic distractions-always did-but with the computer smart phone darned screens-it is much worse than having to grab a radio mike-or turn a rodio dial.
And "computer screens" TINY- writing etc just isn't that visible-so they really really have to focus on the screen.
Safe bet the cop was distracted- if that is so he really isn't "at fault" in the sense that he was doing something 100,000 cops a DON'T DO. He was probably doing what they all do
Yeah his dept probably has some CYA RULE- saying they aren't supposed to do it-but they KNOW they all dop it-more or less a requirement of the job.
Anyone have any personal history on the cop?? Good cop-bad cop-lotta complaints-no complaints.
Being a prick-I looked up Milton Olin's biography-nothing to be found. Guessing if he was with wife #1 he is on good terms with his adfult kids.
If he is on wife 2-3- he probably ISN'T on good terms with kids or trophy wife-and they will push for a settlement-but it won't be one that will memorialize him to get dash cams-"make the world a safer place for bike riders"
Yeah-jerk to bring that up-but internet forum-beside 65 yo-death-not exactly a tragedy-quick death doing something fun-not a terrible way to go.Beats in and out of hospitals-wasting away you final years going from office visit to office visit-maybe spend last 6 months in long term care.
Sucks for him-he probably had 10 more years of riding-which we all domainly for fun(except for a few transportation cyclists which I rarely am-but might become again once I get a beater I won't be pissed to lose assembled)

a friend-of-the-family was killed by police in the states a few years ago, under VERY suspicious circumstances. there are some pretty big discrepancies between the evidence and the official police version of what happened.

his parents have been divorced for about 20 years, and haven't had anything nice to say to each other during that time. both sides of the family have money and a little bit of political clout.

when it happened, it made the local news and quickly went away, but both sides of the family have pooled their resources into (a) finding out what really happened and (b) holding the officers and the dept accountable. this is all being done quietly, behind the scenes.

sometimes these things are followed up without much noise.

as you posted here - https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...0#post16323680

making videos/photos public while a case is pending could come back and bite one in the ass.

The photos that I viewed, happened to be from a local TV news report...after the fact... and were generally not made available by anyone connected to the parties involved.

Any turns in that road are minor once past Calabasas High School.

The 'lane' to the right of the cycle lane is for starting or completing right turns.

No comment on anything that could throw shade. I took that road last night going the long way home from work because I got out a bit late and with construction going on on Mureau road it was no longer timewise and much less stressful.

Other than being too wide open there is no excuse on that section of road.

One of the first steps in a police coverup, do not identify the cop.

The name of the Lost Hills Sheriff’s deputy under investigated is being withheld.

When you took that section of roadway, was it in a motor vehicle at 45 mph or on a bicycle? The design of the roadway where the turn lane ends, is better suited for traffic at 25 to 30 mph rather than 45mph plus. There is such a subtle deviation in the roadway that it can be overlooked by a motorist if their attention is not fully focused on the road, especially at times when the higher speed limit is accessible.

Added from CB's link:

"The City of Calabasas, which has been working on a citywide bicycle master plan for several years to improve safety for cyclists and drivers, is awaiting the outcome of the investigation. After seeing a final report, city officials will review whether they should make changes to the bicycle plan or take action to improve traffic safety where the accident happened.

The police never identify the officers involved in anything.

However, when they arrest someone they plaster their name and face all over the news and say "police believe there are more victims, please come forward with any information"

In this case, I cant imagine how the investigation would be compromised by the public knowing the identity of the deputy.
