Manitowoc man jailed in tricycle hit-and-run

The cyclist pulled himself into the vehicle after it stopped at the suspect's home, and the suspect then tried to lock him inside, the statement said.

Read the insanely stupid statement------------the police are looking for witnesses. The cyclist was thrown into the window, the driver was drunk, why the hell do they need a witness? Throw the driver in jail, and throw away the key until the trial!!!!!

They are looking for MORE witnesses, SOP for an investigation. Also, he WAS arrested, and charged with multiple crimes already.

As the next forumer said, SOP. However cut-and-dried the case against him may be, any failure of procedure might lead to him walking. Not to mention the fact that a good many people have been arrested on the basis of obvious guilt/responsibility who have later been found to be a victim of police/prosecutor incompetence. Not to mention the fact that many cyclists have been the victims of police/prosecutor ...?

Nail everything down (yep, it should be easy) and then take him to court and lock him up if proven guilty of whatever charges are brought against him.

He's very fortunate and surprisingly calm for going through a windshield.

What's going on in Wisconsin? This is the second instance in the past few months of a drunk motorist driving home with a cyclist in his windshield and then proceeding to bed. The prior one died on impact.

To answer my own question, maybe WI just has more cyclists out in the evening/early morning than other places. Locally, we have drunk drivers running into drunk drivers largely because those are the only targets on the road after 10:00 PM. (Yes, that's only my opinion with no data to back it up.)

I was thinking the same thing.

Agreed!! It isn't like the cyclist jumped off his bike and dove head first through windshield.

It might be related to the fact that Wisconsin has one of the highest per capita beer consumption rates in the USA (#5 on some surveys) combined with higher populations and population density compared to the other high rank states.

More beer per person X more people means more drunk drivers.

First, I'm very glad to hear our fellow cyclist is okay.

Who knows. From my observations, a significant portion of the local folk are more likely raise an objection to a cyclist on "their roads" than a motorist leaving "an establishment" in a motor vehicle after having "a few." Maybe drunk driving is just more socially acceptable with a larger section of the population here than in other places.

I will be very interested in seeing what happens with this in the courts. This just might actually be prosecuted seriously due to the alcohol factor. I'm not holding my breath, though. Earlier in the year, a driver was sentenced to 6 months actual jail time after killing a cyclist while driving with a suspended license (no alcohol involved). I wouldn't be surprised if this guy gets off easy because Mr. Gove survived. At least in this case, the driver didn't go back to the bar.

I'm beginning to think that Oregon may not be the drunk driving capital that I always assumed it was. Somehow, this new knowledge does not make me feel any better.

Wisconsin seems to have very lax drunken driving laws. I believe a first offense is a civil infraction - not a misdemeanor like most states - and there's regularly reports of folks getting 6th and 7th DUI convictions. In any other state, they would have been sent to jail or rehab long ago.

Folks in this part of the state are generally pretty nice, though. From another version of the story, a local bike shop donated a new trike to the man who was hit: https://www.nbc15.com/home/headlines/...241092181.html

Oh, I dln't know - look at the numbers of cyclists who get killed because of their "suicide swerves". It is nice of them to be considerate enough to do it when there are no witnesses (apart from the driver), who might be distressed at their actions
